Well, I'm Selling My Spyder

Reliability?

If I had the time: I'd take off for the Left Coast tomorrow! nojoke

...But I think that I'd want to take the scenic route.

Have the time, and have done it.

So Bob, how many trips have you had to scrub because your Spyder broke before you got out the gate. I understand all the fanboy stuff people post. Hell, I've said the same as most of you about leaving for the other side of the country - and have, but that doesn't erase all the problems I've had. They are 'real', not caused by me, or my dealer - best I know.

Not singling you out here. I selected you because I know you won't go all wonky.

I've ridden from Michigan to the Grand Canyon, Durango, up the east coast, down south, never had a failure on the road. I guess I did fry a battery in Missouri once... but that was my fault.

That we are

 Honestly?

:D Not a damned one! nojoke

And Jer: we're good... Always good!

I'm glad for you, and all whom say they've not had serious problems. I mean that. Only wish they could/would be as gracious to those that do, have 'real issues'

If you take the same mileage separately or combined of my other two current bikes, to equal the same mileage on the Spyder. Then the difference in reliability is brutally obvious. Tho the Indian has only 10K on it in the first year, and for good reason, it like the other bike has been without issue mile after mile. That's just a fact. And God know's how well I maintain my equipment. Because I feel my life and my pillions are worth the cost.

i have looked at all your post and you have not had any mayor issues.
my issues have been with my dealer. i go to other dealers in other states if i need something fixed.

my spyder hasn't been started in almost 1.5 years, I can't sell it because it has 75K miles so I will keep it until i retire it to BRP museum. I did try to roll it down the hill yesterday to jump start it only for me and 2 of my neighbors to push it back up the hill and back into my garage

One of these days I will find motivation to start it again

Selling Spyder

That's a big hit. You're not the first to throw in the towel and won't be the last. Is it your dealer? Most likely plays a major role in it, but, BRP shares responsibility there too. Speaking strictly from my experience, Spyders may be fine for riding back and forth to the coffee shop,
but they're hardly a dependable tourer. Dependable, is the key word here.

When we bought our 2012 RT-S, last September, one of the first things to occur was that the fuel and temperature gauges pegged and froze. The Spyder didn't have an extended warranty, but the salesman (Marty Ford) at Snake River Yamaha was willing to, and did make it good on the Spyder. Turned out to be a loose connection. The display went dark this year and while the bike would start, it couldn't be shifted into gear. However, a last ditch effort at trying to get it to function, rapping the display with a knuckle, brought the display back up again. And everything works as before. I will have the connection(s) checked on the reverse of the display to ensure that they are secure and not loose. But I have no doubt in the Spyder's mechanical ability to make an upcoming ride from Wilder, Idaho to Hemet, California in April. We had a 2005 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Peace Officer Edition with just over 43,000 miles on it when we traded it for the 2012 Spyder with just over 22,000 miles. And have never had a single regret. If anything, we plan on trading as soon as feasible for a 2014 or newer Spyder Limited.

Hi Crisis,

Re: Just more evidence that I should keep my 2008 GS.

I'm with you. I have the money to buy a new Spyder without financing; I simply am satisfied with my '08.

Last year I had to cancel my trip to the NorCal Rally because of a crack in my plastic coolant bottle.

I got over it and my life goes on.

Unless something happens this year, I'll be at 2017's NorCall Rally.

Jerry Baumchen

PS) I have had numerous cars leave me standing by the side of the road. :yikes:

Sad news...

Sorry you have had such a bad time with the issues you came upon. Stay in touch and good luck with the next ride. I guess I have been lucky and have not been to the dealer but three times in the last four years and clocked 40,000 miles. Never had to deal with BRP so don't know what that is like....Pictures of the new ride would be nice....

3000.00 miles on it and I have nothing but trouble with it. From DESS to Hard Starting, Belt Runout, and a lot of little things hear and there. BRP
warrenty is usless. They don't want to back anything up. Really liked the F3, but it's in the shop more then I ride it. Looks like I am going back to
Harley Davidson. Well, you live and learn.
I have had the DESS twice, and both times the BRP warranty covered the DESS module, and the switch.

There is a very long thread "DESS KEY CODE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! which I started, it has some very use full info about the DESS. ( the first dess module was replaced on July 2015, & the second dess module & switch was replaced on Aug. 2015) on that thread, I poste
d pictures of the DESS ERROR.

I have a 2014RTS-SE6 with 16,000 miles on it. The dess is the only thing that I have had problems with. Deanna

Hurry and get that old reliable HD. My BF purchased a used Ultra Glide a couple of weeks ago with 25k miles. He died to have it ... said it is a trophy bike. It burns his left thigh with engine heat so he has ordered a heat shield. We went for a 100 mile ride today ... check engine light came on coming home - from a visit to the Harley dealership to get a t-shirt. We stopped to eat on the way home and he drops it ... so far more fun than the law allows . Some trophy [emoji471]. [emoji851]

I've got almost 18K miles on my 2014 RT-S. The only problems I've had were finding a third party to replace the rear tire, then later the front tires (as none of the dealers in my region will install non-OEM tires). Other than that, it's been just fine.

But I'm not sure I'd strike out for the west coast without first investing in an Airhawk seat cushion.....

I will strongly disagree with this statement. Two riding seasons, two 5,000 plus mile TOURING trips, most of the time towing a camper trailer, and over 18,000 miles to date. First from MI up through Canada and all around Nova Scotia. Second trip from MI to UTAH and all around their 5 national parks. Spyder had NEVER been in the shop for any repairs!

BRP doesn't pay well to the shops!

My dealer has about 6 mechanics, one I have worked with in the past. He told me that BRP is tight on the purse strings when it comes to paying for warranty work and the time book the mechanics go by is ridiculous. But far be it for BRP to be the only culprit. He told me that Polaris was worse. I just hope I get as many miles as I have on my other bikes as I do my Spyder.

Not reliable .........HorseS#*+

Gonna have to throw the BS flag on the "unreliable" posts on this thread. I have 45,000 miles on my RS-S and the only issues I have had I have brought on myself. I regularly take 400 mile day trips and I ride like the seat is on fire and my @$$ is catching.

Just not believing it.........
Just sayin'...........

You hit the nail on the head.

How many posts from how many DIFFERENT users?
Then consider the actual number of units sold and the percentage is?????

Now go to a Harley Forum.
Check out the number of problems posted.

Guess what you would find.
The end results will be almost identical!!!!

What you first need to understand about Forums is that they are places people go to complain, NOT praise.

AJ

These are the posts that scare me from getting Spyder, been looking since Dec and finally finally enrolled in a motorcycle class so that I can actually test drive one!

Otter, you'd better keep that BS flag in your poclet;). I'm sure those posting have indeed experienced unreliability issues and are not bull ****ting. Someone who has experienced something like a DESS error in a remote location is usually, and understandably, going to be far more vocal that someone who lives next door to a dealer. What does need to be looked at objectively, is exactly how many riders HAVE experienced reliability issues. Paladin has hit it on the head. Every brand has issues.
