New to the Spyder
Hey all. My wife and I were going to look at a 2015 Spyder F3 SE6 this week for her. I only know about BMW oilheads and wanted to check in this technical forum about any known issues with this? Also, how difficult the maintenance is? Someone had posted in another forum about the maintinence being very expensive and something along the lines of expensive dealership visits. Just like anything I am sure that there may at some point be something that you just can't do yourself or simply don't have specialty tools for the job but I want to make sure that the Spyder isn't something that is going to have to be constantly worked on. I do 99% of the work on my R1150GS which I know is a lot simpler than a 2015 can-am Spyder. Thanks guys. I will attach the pictures and description in a separate post below this. Thanks again.

I'm only guessing here, but believe you guys will be riding two up, you'll need more luggage space even for a weekend trip, but maybe you've already thought of that. I'm not one to be giving much information 'cause I sort of 'lurk' here, read and try to learn for a long time. I know in my city we have a Canam shop that has an awful reputation for Spyder repair and maintenance, so try and find a good one. I won't say anything about self maintenance 'cause I know there will be those doing good comments on that.

Go online to this web site and drill down the the operator's guide for the F3. Look in the table of contents for the maintenance schedule and the tasks that are quite well explained. Except for the spark plug change at 28,000 mile intervals, if you can maintain a BMW you can easily do an F3.

Thanks for the responses. Fortunately the one we are looking at already has extra luggage. She will be on the Spyder by herself as I will still be riding my GS.

I would encourage you to look at the for sale by owner forum here - you can save yourself some $$$ and even possibly get a newer Spyder for less money. There is a 2016 listed in PA in the for sale forum that is now listed on eBay current bid at $9800. I purchased mine from eBay in 2016 - no regrets here. Also there is a white 2015 like the one you are looking at for $11k.

There are no specific problems that I know of "across the board" with the SE type of transmission. An occasional glitch does occur....but not endemic to any specific model or year.
Cost of maintenance, is higher than most motorcycles. $300 dealer oil changes, $200 tire changes...etc. If you do your own maint., then, you will save.
The new Ryker...will change some of the above. Sub $10K entry level price...but not built for touring.

As a former Pittsburgh resident I can vouch for two very good dealers with excellent mechanics in the western PA area.
1. Mosites Motorsports
2. Canam of Windber
As was stated above, If you can work on your GS you can work on the Spyder.
Just get a shop manual (online) and your all set.

Oilhead fan here. We put 100K on our 2004 1150 RT and the only issue was stick coil failure and then only once. If you enjoy doing your own work maintaining a Spyder isn't to expensive. I do my own oil and filter changes as well as adjusting the belt. My Spyder is two years old with 24,000 miles on it and it has been trouble free. It is a complex critter, but no more so than the cars and trucks we all have sitting in the driveway. Car tires, shock stiffeners, wiring for our heated gear, XM radio and Bluetooth for the wife, belt tensioner, windshield, and a few "safety" lights all have been installed and adjusted by me. If you can bleed and maintain the "whizzy" brakes on an oilhead you can handle Spyder maintenance. This site is a great source of info.
