Thanks for the update. It might be a sign of diagnosing the D.E.S.S. problems, I hope! Deanna

How come your can-am dealership did not replace the switch?

Does the part # 710004916 compatible with the 2015 spyder?

Or is the part # 710004916 fit the 2016 spyder models?
Get your keys/and spare key reprogramed, my can-am dealership reprogramed my keys the 2nd time.

Hi, not sure if this said already but...
Unit 2014 RTS - my brother in-law had his module changed at a dealer and then a few months later same error messages and no start. He took it to a second dealer who told him the first dealer installed a module that was old part number / firm ware. They ordered updated module and installed it.
both done on warranty and so far no more trouble. But it's only been couple months now so fingers crossed.
I have a 2014 RTL and no troubles yet, 20K on it and fingers crossed.

Do you know what the old is part # for the module is that the first dealer replaced?

If you get the D.E.S.S. error again take a picture, and show it to the his first dealer.
What is the part # for the updated module?

Here is a the parts list again:
    Model year Model Part Number
    2014 RS,ST, RT 710004190
    2015 RS,ST,RT 710004241
    2015 F3 710004697

Also, here is the Switch # 710004413 that my can-am dealership installed on my 2014RTS-SE6.

I have a 2014RTS-SE6 I got the DESS Module , and the Switch replaced on Aug. 28th, 2015 and I have not had the D.E.S.S error.

If your brother-in-law/or you gets/get the D.E.S.S error again please post on this thread.

Also, if you get the DESS error take a picture( if you can with phone or camera) and take the picture to your dealership. Good luck!
Did your brother-in-law get stranded when he got the DESS issue?

Well, I am now in Robbinsville, NC for the spyders in the smokies gathering, and I got the D.E.S.S. error twice on my way here. It corrected itself each time. Once by simply flipping the key (this happened last week also), and once by switching to the 2nd. key. I am making an appointment with the dealer on Monday morning to have this rectified.

Deanna ~ I wanted to let you know that I joined your 'two timer club'. I also have a 2014 RT-S. I had problems with the DESS error code earlier this summer. My dealer opened a case with BRP and the DESS was replaced under warranty. Two weeks ago I was 500 miles away from home in Yellowstone and I got the dreaded DESS code again. I played hell for several hours to get it restarted and I limped it 400 miles to my dealer. They replaced my DESS for a second time.

If it happens again take a picture, and show the dealer.

What spyder model do you have?

Also what year is your spyder?

Do you have any Warranty left on your spyder?

If you do have warranty on your spyder, the work is covered under WARRANTY, and read the beginning of this thread that the DESS module, and Switch work that I had done was under the warranty. Also while you are at the dealership on Monday have the dealership reprogram both keys, and give you a new lock for the rear trunk. I posted the part #'s on this thread for the DESS module replacement. Have the dealership open-up a case with BRP, and be sure that you take pictures of the DESS error code.

You were lucky that it corrected it self each time on the way there.

Keep us posted on what happens on Monday@ the dealership.

Please post on this thread. Deanna

Thanks for letting me know. What was the part # that your can-am dealership used to replace the DESS the first/ second time?

When you played for several hours, did you take your key and walk away and wait for 10- 15 minutes to let the computer reboot?

Did you get the DESS module replaced last year?

If so what was the Part # for the DESS Module?

Did you have your can-am dealership open up a case with BRP last year?

BRP has had cases where a cell phone or magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch cause this. This includes any device that may emit some type of frequency.
Technical Explanation: When the DESS module sends its signal to the antenna to read the key chip, the radio frequency produced by the antenna is too strong the key chip is saturated. The saturation changes the data transmitted back to the D.E.S.S. module causing a bad lecture of the key chip.

    Warranty:
    This is under warranty.

I too have just became a "two time member" of this problem...Stopped today about 50 miles from home and went to restart and got the DESS orange screen...After about an hour of cycling the key and trying the spare key it started with the original key and I rode home...Called my dealer and he said he'll open a case with BRP tomorrow...

Had a new DESS module 710004190 installed on 6/30/15

Larryd, Which spyder model do you have?

Did you walk away with your spare key in your hand and wait for about 10minutes ( for the computer to reboot)?

I would recommend that you do not keep the key/keys in the storage compartment ( below the ignition switch if you have a RT), because ( this what BRP said in an email that I got from my can-am dealership" We have had cases where a cell phone or magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch cause this. This includes any device that may emit some type of frequency end of quote".

The problem is Intermittently, the ignition key may not be recognized causing the unit not to start. The D.E.S.S. ERROR message will be displayed in the Cluster. Solution: Replace the DESS module. Program the keys using B.U.D.S. referring to 2014 RT shop manual section Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.).

Do you have warranty left on your spyder?

If you do this is covered under warranty
    .
Ask your Can-Am dealership to replace the switch ( part # 710004413) my can -am dealership replaced the switch/ DESS module at the same time. (the 2nd time) Take a picture and show it your can-am dealership. Have your can-am dealership reprogram the both keys.

Keep us posted on what happens and Good luck!

2014 RTS with 7424 miles...Still under warranty...I leave the key in the ign. all the time...I kept setting in the seat while trying to get it started...I did pull the key out of the switch several times...I do not have a cell phone in the glove box but it is in my shirt pocket...I did take a picture and sent it to my dealer...

This is the second time for this exact same problem in 4 months...Worked good for the first 14 months of ownership...I have a GREAT dealer...But I'm getting scared about going away with this bike...My 08 GS was 100% reliable...larryd

Larryd, that is something new I have not heard of "setting in the seat while trying to get it started" Did you take the key with you and walk away to let the computer reboot?

I was also scared about going away with my 2014 RTS-SE6, but I went any ways( if I got stranded I would have called Roadside Assistance, but I did not need to) The first time that I got the D.E.S.S error was on July 14,2015( from Repair Order from dealership) and the second time that I got the D.E.S.S. error was in Aug. ( from Repair Order from dealership).
My first spyder was a 2012RTS-SE5 and I did not have the D.E.S.S. error. Have your dealership reprogram both keys, and change the switch( part # 710004413). Good luck and keep us posted. Deanna

Do you know that keys can now be cloned in a hardware store ?
In other words, if you have two keys, the DESS module gets programmed to accept key 1 and key 2. If you want a third key you need to have the DESS reprogrammed to accept key 1, key 2, and key 3.
The cloning technology is readily available, so you can make multiple copies of the keys. In other words, instead of having three distinct keys, you can have three copies of key 1. The DESS module can't tell the difference.
If the DESS can't tell the difference between a programmed key and a cloned key, then I suggest the whole concept of security with the DESS module is completely and totally nullified.
In simple terms, the key technology has advanced beyond the DESS module, making it useless. All it seems to be doing is adding expense and another point of failure without delivering much in the way of security.
They ought to just scrap the damn thing and go to a simple inexpensive key without a chip in it. This is clearly an example of making the machine more complicated for no damn reason other than the fact that they can.
    Think Windows 8.
    Or New Coke.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong. And if I am, I'm sure someone on this forum will let me know right away.

This DESS problem only arrived with the 2014 RT's, and only on some machines...You would think that BRP had a system on the earlier machines that worked fine they would have stuck with it???

As far as calling road side assistance I tried that with the first DESS failure and my out of pocket expense for the roll back service would have been over $500.00...So I ended up trailering the Spyder home and back to the dealer on my dime...

So here it is prime foliage season in south central PA and my Spyder setting in the garage waiting for BRP to snap out another fix for a problem they seem to have engineered into the system...Or if its something I'm doing or have done to the Spyder tell me what and I'll undo it...

You shouldn't need to be afraid ever time you turn this thing off if its not going to start again due to this DESS issue...Surely BRP can program this feature off until they get a proper fix???

don't have my Spyder RT as of YET, but I am working on it. I know on my Harley road king if my IPhone's cell data or wifi is turned on it screws with the factory security system. took me most of the summer to figure out what was causing the problem. and it wasn't just my IPhone doing it either, the wifes did it also. food for thought.

I just talked to my dealer today about my DESS problem that he reopened a case on last Friday...STILL NOTHING from BRP...Tomorrow it will be a week with NO Spyder riding...I guess I should be glad it rained several days...

This is my second Spyder, I own 2 Outlander ATV's and 2 Sea-Doo's...Just makes me want to rush out and purchase a Ski-Doo for the winter...

Deanna, i don't have know the part #. I looked on my past invoices and all it says is replaced DESS module. I do know that the DESS module cost $132.99, but it was covered under warranty

I played that game of walking away with my key for over 30 minutes. it never worked. i ended up leaving it sit for over 2 hours and went back to it. still wouldn't start. i kept trying off and on for the next 30 minutes and finally it started. once it did, i never turned it off until i got to my dealer. i was afraid it wouldn't start again.

    Larryd,

At least your can-am dealership reopened a case with BRP, maybe you will get a an answer/ and taking care of. What is up with ...... Still NOTHING From BRP.......??? BRP are you listening! Good luck!

When I had the 2nd D.E.S.S module replaced ,I had called my can-am dealership on a Monday and the D.E.S.S. module was @ the dealership on Thursday, and my appointment was on Friday . ( BRP is only across the boarder from Vermont) Deanna

Is this the first D.E.S.S module that got replaced?

The part # for the D.E.S.S. module that my dealership replaced in my 2014RTS-SE6 is 710004190. On my invoice the price say's $0.00 for the D.E.S.S. module, and the switch # is 710004413 and the cost for that is $0.00. Also, the 2 items were under warranty and I still have warranty left.

Glad that you finally got your Spyder started, so you could take to your dealership. Keep us posted what happens next. Deanna
