Disturbed by what I saw yesterday at Rockefeller Memorial at Newfound Gap
Yellow Spyder RT.
Male driver, Female passenger. As they passed below, I could see another passenger sitting in front of the driver, who looked to be a 4-5 year old little boy.
They went on there way back down headed to Cherokee. I just could not believe what I had just witnessed and I still can't shake the image from my head.
We never saw them again as we headed back down in the same direction.
Just another crappy day in Paradise....Aloha!

Baloo is my name. Spyders are my game. Well, it's a doo-bah-dee-doo, yes, it's a doo-bah-dee-doo, I mean a doo-bee, doo-bee, doo-bee, doo-bee, doo-bee-dee-doo. And, well, now. Ha ha! What have we here?

In Bangkok and Manila I have seen as many as five people and a baby riding small CC motorcycles in the worst traffic in the world. This is a common scene in those area's. This is the only "family" transportation they have. This practice would be far less dangerous on a Spyder in light traffic but still does not make it right.

They are very few Spyders here in Thailand, for good reason as a 2012-13 RS will cost about $55,000 and a RT will set you back around $70,000.00.

I will not allow youngsters to ride as passengers on any motorcycle/spyder. In the event of a quick stop or an accident, they are going to be ejected with force.
Safety gear is usually lacking to start with, and the problem just gets compounded.

Well..!!
have always taken my kids and kids whose parents okayed it for rydes in the neighborhood (around the block) I would never go out on the open road with them. Not wise, pehaps, but they got it out of their systems and were happy as can be. Back home it is like the pic's above, a true circus balancing act...

My cut off has always been foot pegs. If they can reach them correctly (no cheating with tippy toes) and mount, dismount without assistance, I will take them for a ride. Of course, they must have at least a denim jacket and long pants with over the ankle boots, also leather gloves. Helmets are not optional for rider or passenger. If they don't have the needed gear and I don't have something that will reasonable fit, sorry, no ride.
Very low traffic back road or around the block / parking lot rides.

State Laws will vary....but I know in Oregon a motorcycle passenger is limited to one and they must be able to have feet rest on foot pegs.
I use to give my kids rides all the time.....you need to be careful they dont fall asleep.....it is common and if this is a problem....then no more rides.

I have a feeling if law enforcement saw them riding that way it wouldn't take them long to get a ticket.

I live in East Tennessee and frequently ride in the Smoky Mountain area. I have seen the same people you have described with the child. Was it the same people? Can't be sure but most likely it is. I hope the odds don't catch up with them...for the child's sake. The adults should know better.

To call some people stupid would be to complement them profusely on their level of common sense.

You have to be their to understand the necessity and value of the scooter! This is in Vietnam (Saigon) and this is a tame photo - I've seen a scooter hauling 12 5-gallon water jugs - that's skill!! It's creativity to be able to use a scooter in place of a truck!
And then below is what it looks like to have a 6'4" American (I'm on left) on a scooter!! Driving in Saigon is a bit nerve wracking at first but then you realize there is organization in the apparent chaos!! Quickly let go of the handles!!!
