Question 2013 RS - 6 less hp an 100# heavier?

So I decided to weigh my 2011 spyder RS a truck scale, fueled with me on it, 990#! Sounds close, 220# for me with gear, 50# fuel, etc.

So BRP says the 2013 weighs 799#, and has 100hp, down 6hp. This seems strange, anyone know what's going on with that?

    Default Don't know..!!

Do know they re-worked the engine down to 100 HP but know nothing about the wieght change. I have the 2012 RS sm5 106 HP and striped away a lot of weight with the aftermarket pipe and air filter..

Advertised weights often have more to do with marketing, than they do with actual scales...

That makes it even stranger. Where does 100 extra lbs help with anything, especially marketing?

In 2013 model year there was a redesign and a standardization effort. The RS, the new ST and the RT are all built around the same new main frame. The major suspension components front and rear are the same as well. That is where most of the extra weight for RS comes from. The engine was standardized as well. Instead of different engines in the RS and RT, in 2013 they used the same engine in all 3 models. It is the same engine as used in the 2010 to 2012 RT. Yes the peak HP is 6 HP less, but the HP and Torque curve is wider and flatter. That translates into better drivability.

You asked a question, and I gave you my opinion as to what was going on. No doubt; the new frame, engine, brakes, and wheels may have made up a healthy percentage of the increase. (We've yet to see any hard numbers about it though...)

EDIT: I just went and dug up the Dry weight of a 2012, and 2013 RT. 929, and 955 pounds. That should take care of the difference due to the frame, tires, and wheels...
I suspect that while they were looking at the re-designed RS; they figured it best to just come clean about the actual weight.

Why are you worried about a post count that isn't your own?

I'd like to know if the pre 2013's are legitimately faster.

I believe, and this is just MoLee talking. I think the difference is just a marketing trick, I've had at least two dealers tell me about the 100 HP compared to the 115 in the F3 along with a comparable weight between the two. did a little research since it didn't sound right and my GS when it was being sold back in 08/09 was 106 HP and 100 pounds lighter than the F3. I know car companys have misstated HP figures for years to keep insurance rates down, however I suspect this may be to help F3 sales. Guess we will find out at the Drag Races during Spyderfest.

If possible could someone post some drag race times times between the pre 2013 RS's, post 2013's RS's and F3's after Spyderfest as it will be fascinating (not interested in RT's as we know they are slow:-))

Timing slips will tell the tale...
Oh! Does anybody still have their purchase paperwork on a pre-2013 RS? We need to find a Manufacturers Statement of Origin for one. (The MSO)
It'll show the weight of the bike when it was produced.
I just saw an MSO for a brand new F-3...
The weight was listed on it, as 897 pounds...
    The brochure says 850...
