    Default 08 vs 09

I can buy a new '08 or '09 - the difference is $750. Which would you buy??

I know there's a bit of history on this site, and I would appreciate your views..

    Thanks!

you can get the 08 and use the $750 on mods.

either way, you can't go wrong.

Or use the $750 towards the Best Plus warranty.

Yep. I think the 08 SM5s are running as good as the 09 SM5s so I wouldn't think there would be a reliability difference between them. Looking at it another way, for the same money you can get one machine with a two year warranty or get the other machine with a four or five year warranty. I think I know which way I would go.

Are there any differences in the 08 vs. 09 SM5's?

IMO, I would look at the depreciation. I know you plan on keeping it for a long time. But an 08 will always be a year older. I had the same decision as you several months ago. I went with the 08 but there was a much larger difference than $750.

I love my 09 but sure would of thought about it pretty hard if I would have been given that option. I'm not sure what the resale issues are at this point in time since they are only on their 3rd production year. Either one will be a blast!!!

    Default good points , , , ,

Depreciation should be considered, but I found that I paid about $100 less for insurance on an 08 vs. an 09.

I think my 08 SE5 is a later model - maybe built later in the year. It has air dams to redirect the hot air coming off the radiator and eliminating the hot right foot feature. In comparing it to an 09 model, I could not find anything that was visibly different. Remember, the SE5s came out quite a while after the SM5s, I would expect that they and the SM5 manufactured at that time would have some difference from the 'Premiere Models'.

I would buy an 08 SE5 again - no hesitation. I have now owned it for 20 days and have almost 1k on it. I can't stay off it.

By the way, I sent you a PM on pricing that you have not looked at. You may find something useful in that.

Also consider that BRP may be releasing new models soon - that will also change the whole complexion of buying.

Save the money and get the 08...you shouldn't buy a vehicle and worry about depreciation values...do you intend to keep it only a year or two or three? When you bought your house, did you worry about economic slides that would depreciate your house? Neither did any of us!

Spend the extra money on the BEST warranty...I didn't get the PLUS as it doesn't save you much money in the long-run and I'd rather have money in my pocket than front it to BRP for service visits.

Either way you go, you'll love your Spyder...it's a fun ride!

I would agree that you should save the money and get the 08. I just think you should be getting a bigger price concession on the 08.As I recall, the price increase between the 08 and 09 was about $800. So I don't think you are getting a "deal" on the 08.

As far as depreciation is concerned, I certainly consider it in a purchase of an asset. A Spyder, like a car, is a depreciating asset. That depreciation is a major cost of ownership. Whereas, a home is an appreciating asset. (Until this recession) It goes up in value so age is not so much a factor. Your home will eventually turn around and go back up in value. Your car probably never will, nor will your spyder.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you buy the 08(like I did) you are buying a one year old machine and you should pay for it accordingly. Believe me, the dealer has it on his books at the depreciated value plus his cost was less.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 08 come with a 3 year warrenty up front at no cost to the buyer, however the 09 comes with only 2 years warrenty with no cost, if you add 4 more years to the 08 with the money you'll save you will be protected for 7 years and not 6 as for the 09.. I think I'm right here, or at least thats what the dealer told me,, oh and I went with the 08 about a month ago instead of the 09 for that reason and YES I bought the extra years warrenty and still was able to get a couple of assy with the money I saved,, I beleive there was a 1,200.00 dollar differance in the 2 when I bought mine and its only been a month ago however, it is riding season..
    Just my 2cents worth.

The 3 year was only a limited time Promo for the 08's from my understanding it is no longer available. Its now just a 2 year again. So you can get a total of 5 years if you add the 3 year B.E.S.T plan.

For a second I was gonna get upset because my 08 only came with a 2 year warranty. Now that I see it was a limited time promo, I'm OK.

    Would get neither.

Smart men wud save thousands by getting a used 08 buying the BEST warranty and using the rest for a trip or superb vacation. Better still in a bank acct for future upgrades.

There are some available with add on mods for around $13K.

Our dealer was offering $1K off on '09's and $2K off on '08's. Add the $700 difference and the '08 was $1700 less.

Our deal was $17K OTD for an '08 SE5 or about $15399 +++. Similar deal on an '09 SE5 was $17,099 +++ or about $18,700 OTD.

For us it was a no brainer, that $1700 paid for the Hindle, BEST, CalSci and Kewlmetal bars with a buck or two left over.....
