An unsolicited call from BRP...
...At least not directly solicited. A BRP Customer Service representative called me on Wednesday to discuss the problem I'm having with my 2013 ST Limited (Chattering when taking off in forward and reverse). I was shocked! It turned out to be a very good discussion and I learned a few things. I pick up my Spyder tomorrow and will let you know if the problem has been resolved.
Thank you BRP for following up!

What did you learn?

I learned why my dealer could not resolve my issue while the second dealer could (or at least said he did). It seems that the second dealer was at the right place at the right time (Club BRP) and asked questions regarding the chattering on some models. The "Technical Specialist" that he was speaking to told him to change out the centrifugal clutch. I also learned that my dealer found out that my ST-L was at another dealership and was on the phone with BRP trying to find out why this information was not disseminated to the dealerships. I was told that this issue is not widespread therefore the fix is not out to the dealerships yet. I also learned that BRP has a three level training program and that they require all dealerships to have trained techs. I did not ask to what level that requirement is but the question is on my list of questions for when I call him back on Monday. I believe level 1 pertains to BRP's computer systems, level 2 is related to a specific BRP product, and level 3 is what they call a Master Tech that is trained in all BRP products. Their product training consists of stations with issues that the trainee has to diagnose and repair.
In the end, I feel like BRP was trying to smooth out the relationship with my dealer for both me and BRP.

My STS SE5 chatters when taking off from a dead stop rather forward or reverse. It stops pretty much as soon as it starts once I get rolling. I kind of accepted that as just one of its idiosyncrasies. Are you supposed to have none of that at all?

Mine did the same thing, just when taking off in forward or reverse. The second dealer I brought it to said it should not happen and it is caused by problem with the centrifugal clutch portion of the clutch assembly. I'll let you know after I pick it up tomorrow if it has been resolved.

Just curious did you get chattering when bike was cold and would go away once it warmed up.

Great news..!!
because they did call even if they know the problem and the fix. Communication always helps. You should be ryding chatter free from now on...enjoy..!!

Like I said, I came to accept the chattering as a quirk just like I accepted the loud clunk and surge I get when I shift into first or reverse from a cold start. I still think that "clunking" has got to be putting extra wear and tear on something. My dealer told me it was normal like some have said here but I wonder if BRP would agree?

The chatter on mine happened cold and warm, didn't matter if I just started or had ridden 100 miles.

Communication is key to any relationship, I'm glad I got the call from BRP.
I am very excited about picking up my ST Limited tomorrow!

Not understanding the conclusion here, but my ST-S has the clunking into first gear....what should I tell my dealer to check specifically?

My bike is fine as far as any heat problem, I do have an unusual clunk into first gear though.
If it is normal, I'm not worried about it.
Should I start a raving thread about it?

A clunk into first gear is normal for many motorcycles...including the Spyder.

Yup better get 'er started before I do. Mine has been doing that AND leaking oil from the clutch inspection plate there are 4 seals on the SE5. I have seen it torn down you just reminded me to check for oil again Sheesh
I forgot to mention the mouse squeak it makes when it does engage in R or 1st. It went away for a while after the dealer pulled the cover and verified the leak and reported it to BRP. They cleaned it up and the squeak stopped but it is BAAAK. I guess some of us pay closer attention to what our bikes do.

Thx for post. As with others I thought this was something normal. Pretty much done for this year will take to dealer in March once the dust has settled over problem. Who knows maybe BRP will send another letter.

Yep my 2011 RTS SM5 clunks going into first and I have been told it's normal. Something about the gear shape. I also get a lighter clunk going into 2nd. I road with a bunch of people here with other RT's and theirs does the same thing either SM5 or SE5.

I'm sure some "clunk" is OK but my bike actually moves (surges), doesn't that seem a little severe? Believe me if I knew that it's not damaging anything else every time it does it, then I can accept that. I guess I need to go check out some 2 wheels and feel their "clunk".

I hear you on that mine bangs pretty hard too and am wondering if it has caused the oil seepage I have experienced at the clutch inspection cover.
