    Default Parking Brake ?

Today I discovered my parking brake is not holding. What can I do besides take it back to the dealer?

have you had the fix done on it? The original parking brake had faulty 'teeth', thus making it not work, or stick...dealers were instructed to fix this free of charge...it'd be under warranty, regardless...

Where the brake cable attaches at the rear brake housing you'll see two nuts [holding the cable] back off the forward one then tighten the rear one,
Till the brake holds with 3 clicks, then tighten the forward one that should fix it.

If it is not holding, adjust it. If it is not clicking and latching spray a little WD40 on the latch under the frame by the pedal.

Depending on how much adjust you'll need this may help:

In addition, the adjustment procedure and how to adjust the lever on the spline is in the service manual - this is if you need a much bigger adjustment then just a cable adjustment.

Both -cable and spline- are straight forward to perform in your garage at home.

    Hope that helps.
    Cheers.

It's not so bad if it doesn't work on an SM, as you can just leave it in gear. It is very dangerous on an SE though, as even in gear it will roll anywhere it wants to. Mine quit holding a while back, even after I adjusted it. Luckily the dealer tore it apart while working on my front sprocket and belt replacement and got it adjusted better than it ever was.

    Default Parking Brake ?

We tried adjusting it several times with no luck. Guess I'll have to take it back to the dealer for fixin'. Thanks for all the info.

    Default belt guard

Mine wasn't behaving correctly either, right after getting it. Then I figured out part of the issue is, its catching on the belt guard. Anyone else dealing, having dealt with, this? I have a pretty steep driveway, and my local gas station is pretty angled thus the extra push now and then, on the park brake.

I went back to the old VW problem solver of parking brake problems and use a BRICK!

This after the non tech installed the new cable wrong at the pedal linkage.

I wrote in earlier post, but did you get the notice about the faulty parking brake? Was this work done? If not, you should have it done...it fixes the problem...

For some reason I wouldn't really feel right about carrying a brick in my trunk all the time; however, it may have been better than the few times I had to rely on backing the rear wheel against a curb to keep my Spyder from rolling away on its own.

This problem only affected the early Spyders, mostly the PE GS version.

Well, we kept tinkering with the parking brake and finally got it to hold.

Forgetting about the brick when I was ready to drive off was another problem.

I can see where that would be a bit of a problem as well.

When I was a young construction worker, we were assigned a beat up old International crew cab for a work truck. The parking brake was toast. We stopped at a coffee shop, and parked on an incline, but the truck kept rolling back. Quickly thinking, I jumped out and stuck my fiberglass hardhat behind the wheel. When we left the coffee shop, we forgot about it, until the truck tire was squarely on top. That lasted about five seconds, until the hardhat shattered and collapsed. Unfortuantely, we had run into the department director and the superintendent at the coffee shop, and they saw the whole thing. The hardhat problem was nothing, compared to the chewing out I endured. Do not use your helmet to block the Spyder wheel.

Scotty? I would have made the argument that that was a good test for a work helmet. Not only did it stop the work truck from rolling and perhaps damaging another vehicle or building. It also proved that the helmet wouldn't protect your head from a falling object, like an International Crew Cab work truck.

My RT (and Lamont's too) had a BIG problem with the parking brake. It has to do with the electric actuator (which is a wheel that turns and pulls the brake cable). When we went to disengage the brake, the cable would pop out, rendering the brake inoperative. Don't think this is your problem, or is it?

Yes, some RTs have had this issue, which is different from the early GS parking brake problem, which was related to poorly machined parts.
