Getting Ready to Buy First Spyder
Looking for some advice. Looking to get an RS with semi auto transmission. I am about 5'8 and wondering if necessary to get risers. I am looking for more of an upright ride. Also, the foot pegs seem a bit short and I would like to consider floorboards for it. I live in Austin Texas and looking to get a good price on the RS. At MSRP + the SET, I think I am around $18K. Obviously, I would like to get a better deal than that. Any advice on negotiating this price, outside of the usual, like finance outside of dealership or bring cash? Thanks for any help.

As it happens, I am also 5'8 and my ryde is a GS/RS-SE5 semi-auto. I do mostly sporty rides of shorter duration, with some longer distance as well. The 1" BRP riser took away the previous wrist pain for me and works well for sport ryding, but if touring is your thing you may want to go with a 3 or 4" riser, as many do. For leg comfort, I use KewlMetal hiway brackets and Kury pegs. Again, for touring, you may prefer floorboards. The sponsors on this site will be able to equip you with almost any configuration you could want; check them out.

From one Texan to another welcome
Neez gave great advice. The 3-4" risers and floorboards will put you in a more upright position.

Thanks much for the info. I am still wondering about your opinions regarding the pricing of the RS and if there is any wiggle room?

wiggle room will depend on ur dealer... he may give accessories to help the sale along...

If you want to get around the stealer-ship prices, check on here for a nice used one for a good deal; I have a 2010 RS-S in DFW that I have been trying to decide if I want to sell and there are plenty others listed. You could list in the WTB section as well as to specifics that you are looking for.

Definitely check into the used market if you want to get a deal on a Spyder. Many owners are trading up to the RT and selling their RS models at good discounts. As with anything else, some dealers will be willing to cut you a great deal to move a 2009 or 2010 now that the 2011s are coming out, while others are going to want full retail no matter what. You will definitely have to do your homework in order to find the best deal for you. Best of luck with your search.

+1
IMHO, bargain for a 2009 or 2010...no reason they can't be had for a nice reduction in price...

Our local dealers do NOT deal - they want $14K+ for a demo '08.... So after I sold my RS, I got a very good deal on my RT on this board.
My advice for an upright position is buy an RT - I never could get comfortable on longer trips on the RS - but everyone is different.

If you get the RS and install any riser you may also want to change to a taller windshield... taike into account the riser height and how it changes your seating position if you're order a new bubble to ride behind...

Bill, with all dur respect, if I recall you are a bit more than 5'8' tall. For us shorter riders, the proper mods can make an RS very comfortable.

Hi Buckaroo,
I am 5'8" tall and do not like the "sport" position. I have a 2009 RS SE5. I added a much taller windshield, put on HeliBar 5" raisers w/ ThrottleMeister Throttle grips and designed my Seal FloorBoards for riding flexibility. I now sit straight and have a large range of foot and leg movement for those longer rides. For me, it makes for a very comfortable riding position. Good luck on your price hunt. There is a great range in the quality of dealers.
Ride in comfort,
john

So you're saying a 7% discount. Reasonable. Anybody know what the markup is on an RT?
