Default Can I replace just one side of the engine case?

I bought a new/used case, both sides. But only my clutch side case is bad due to the oil pump cavity being damaged.
For grins I mated my good side case to the new side case athat I need and they seem to match up well.

The only reason I would like to only replace one side is because the case has a serial number on it. The the side with the number on it happens to my case side that is good.

Ya fig numbers gotta match vin unless well documented & done by dealer & whatever system correction/update they might do. Worth investigating at DMV -state police, Possibly similar to replacement of dash odometer. Know numbers matching documents mandatory on boats & watercraft LOUISIANA anyway

Thank you for the reply. It’s not illegal to replace an engine in Arizona. I have two salvage vehicles that have different engines. They both were licensed at the MVD through a VIN inspection. They record the frame and engine numbers. As long as they don’t come back as stolen it’s fine. And these vehicles were reported as wrecked and totaled, I rebuilt them, so salvage.
The reason I want to keep the VIN correct on the Spyder is just because it has a clean title and so its resale value is good should I ever decide to sell it.

could always keep the side case that has the #, if there was any problem to show what old # was and new case #
