There and back again - 6 North Egmont
So im off on a day ride to that mountain again.
This time I made a trip up to the North Egmont Visitor Center.
There are walking tracks which I have done leading off into the foothills and its one of the main routes to the summit @ 8260 feet.
Its a very steep mountain with drop offs and right on the coast where the weather can change from sun to snow within minutes. Not to be underestimated for a moment...
The Visitor Center is a road-end 1/2 way up on the Northern side and ends at the Bushline and the rocks and scree starts.
So today it was home to Egmont Village turnoff and up the hill.
Then the long way around the coast to home via SH 45.
Thats called The surf Highway as there are surfing beaches one after the other.
I surfed at Oakura, Weld and Stent road mostly.
I will post up a link for 45 later on in the post. Its an amazing ride albeit a bit bumpy with some tricky corners where the road goes down and oner rivers with narrow bridges.
We lived up that way in the late 60's and early 70's.
It was a big day as I made some stops along the way and reflected of the past.
Checked out my old school I attended, our home and a few other spots I remembered. Good day out.
The ride was about 400k and gate to gate took 7 hrs with stops and about 5 1/2 hrs riding involved. I sorta gapped at 2pm after lunch at the Butlers Reef Hotel in Oakura and only stopped for fuel in the last 2 hrs.
Some snaps to share on the mountain road.
It sadly was in cloud on the top but it was a good ride up and had some good views looking out and around.
So hats on boys and girls we are off.
Egmont Village.
