The dealer, nearest me, has ordered a new ignition system. He's telling me that there is an "antenna" in the ignition that communicates with the chip in the key. Ok, I get that is probably simplifying things, but he also told me the Can Am will do nothing about this. My cost (guessing) will be around $700 when all is said and done. I know the part cost is $400+.
If using BUDS on my Spyder will save the $$ as well as the aggravation of my Spyder being in the shop....I'm down for it. Where do I find someone that will do this for me?
The dealer might be " GUESSING " about that FIX …… Ask them " if that doesn't work - do I have to pay for it ?????? " ….good luck …. Mike

If you look at what appears to be an ignition unit on the parts fiche, you'll notice it's labeled DESS Antenna. That's gonna be your weakest link as it's a mechanical part. Certainly, 'retrying' the whole key thing fits in with that scenario.
Depending on the *design* of the DESS system and how/whether the chip key's reader modules/antenna's are node locked - they may also need to replace the DESS module as well. The node locking has to do with preventing someone shoving an aftermarket DESS 'spoofing' system into the mix.
Before column mounted ignitions in cars, there was nothing preventing you from popping out your ignition popping it into someone else's in order to steal it.

I've read every post on that Thread ….. and 90% have just had to change the MODULE to get the issue fixed ….. which leads me to believe " changing the ignition switch " is purely a GUESS, and doesn't really effect anything …… good luck …. Mike

Actually no, as in any RFID system, there is an antenna, even if it's a near-field, inductively coupled one - and the fiche indicates it's in the key module. It's not a separate part on it's own. That's an Achilles heel here. At any rate, the parts cost are not out of line, what gets expensive is labor. In some cases it is more economical to replace parts as a system than to have a tech spend expensive time on your nickel to diagnose down to a specific individual component. Modern electronic devices like smartphones and PC's are great example. I could repair broken PC motherboards down to the component all day long at $90+ an hour - but you likely won't go for it as you could probably could buy an entire new PC with the bill I'd hand you.
It may be true in your estimation that the majority of these Spyders have had the module replaced. Certainly, a module could fail if it's antenna failed due to an improper load. We don't have any failure analysis on the parts here without any input from BRP themselves, and the bean counters don't usually let the engineers make public pronouncements. We're no smarter off than the dealer tech's here. All we can do is make anecdotal observations.

Nope. I've put almost 3,900 miles on it and have never had a D.E.S.S. fault.

Yes I have both, but since I just got the monster flash, I was worried they may say that caused it and void my warranty. I would rather go to Spyderpops and have them turn it off and not worry about it happening again. If they detect the flash and have to replace the module, they might reprogram my ecu and wipe out my flash.

I got it today a week after getting the Monster flash. It would not do anything for a few minutes and I just pulled the key and started over and it started. Im not sure if it helped me or hurt me. I would rather get it turned off and not worry about it happening again.

Does the Monster Flash have any thing to do with the spyder?
That was off topic.

this problem has been seen with BRPs skidoo snowmobiles in the past..So. I'm new to the spyder ride, & I'm picking up my "New-to-Me" 2014 RT Limited with 5,000 miles. Do you need the spyder there to program this, OR Can I send in the module & keys in, to have that crap dess removed?? tks!

if you find a dealer that will cancel the dess module , please, please post who that is - because to-date I have never heard of a dealer that will do it. you need a buy a special buds license to be able to cancel buds …… if you are out of warranty just buy a module ( $135.00 ) and carry it with you …. when this issue happened I moved my module to a very easily accessible location ( under right headlight ) and change mine in the dark without a flashlight or tools …...mike

Processor needs to be functional in the bike for BUDS to work. IE you would need to bring the whole bike in.

I have a 2014RTS-SE6 and I have had the D.E.S.S module( replaced twice both times under warranty) and had the Switch replaced once( under warranty), and the keys, reprogrammed once ( under warranty), the above was done 4 years ago.
Since than I haven't had the D.E.S.S error and my spyder will be out of warranty next month( B.E.S.T warranty). Yes, any work done on my spyder will be out - of -pocket. Also, I started this thread for other spyder riders/BRP were aware of the problem.

Hi, I think your question was directed to me ….. it's part # 710004916, this is the 5th edition of the same part, it's their best attempt so far at fixing the problem …. however there are still people reporting failures ….. but it's the only model currently available …. the last price I saw was @ cheapcycleparts.com ….. for $ 134.99 …. It's possible you won't ever have yours fail , but if it does and you aren't in your garage, after you pay for the Tow, the dealer is going to charge about $ 600.00, and it may take them 2-3 weeks to get it done ( possibly longer ) Total cost could be $1000.00, plus your down time. To be honest, most DESS failures aren't total initially. Usually it can be started after you get the " orange screen of death " ie. DESS failure screen..... However it will occur again and again until It completely fails. I have posted in detail where and how to replace, also where I moved mine too for very easy access ( using the OEM wires from the harness - no splicing ) ….. Mike

I was in Johnstown, PA, a couple of weekends ago and got the D.E.S.S orange screen of death. I simply removed the key, re-inserted it almost immediately and it did start. I called the dealer that I use and was told that he had the part in stock and could replace it while I wait (one and a half hours) and gave me an appointment date and time. He quoted me a price and I told him that I had the B.E.S.T. warranty, he checked and told me that it would be replaced under warranty. I'm not sure if I'll need to pay the deductible or not, but that's beside the point. I'm just reluctant to ryde because I have no way of getting it there if it does fail.
