    Default Goodbye John Glenn...

...and Rest in Peace. I pray that you have touched the face of God.

    High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air… .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
    — John Gillespie Magee, Jr

I usually think these RIP threads are foolish, but I have to admit, John Glenn's death has hit me pretty hard.

"foolish" in what way, ThreeWheels? I find them very informative.

I remember the early days of the space race. We'd be glued to the TV to keep up with what was going on. It was dangerous for the astronauts and thrilling for us all. We felt like part of a patriotic effort to test the limits of humanity. John Glenn was a symbol of that time and, just as he's now gone, I fear we'll ever experience it again.

We have lost another of the great heros. I watched his three orbit flight as it happened on network TV. They had a glitch with the heat shield and we did not know until the end if he was going to make it back or not that day. That was edge of the seat stuff for me.

The poem printed above fits the man. Thanks for posting it BigGuy.

Godspeed John, on your final flight.

    Thumbs up B@lls of steel

A truly great man. Bravest of the brave. To sit on top of tons of rocket fuel ( ever seen these rockets explode??) and be launched into the cold vacume of space---that's bravery in my book.

RIP John Glenn---- go with God.

    Default John Glenn good read

John Glenn gave this incredible response when a political opponent said he 'never held a job'

In 1974, Glenn's military record offered an opening for criticism by his opponent, who was mindful of Americans' anti-war fervor during the Vietnam War. Metzenbaum began calling him "Col. Glenn" to highlight his time in the Marine Corps, and later told him that he "had never met a payroll," which Glenn perceived as being told that his military record and service with NASA didn't qualify as "having held a job."

His response during the debate was remarkable, and at the end of it, he received more than 20 seconds of sustained applause, according to PBS. Here's what he said:

"I spent 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I lived through two wars. I flew 149 missions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line.

You go with me as I did out to a veterans' hospital and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them that they didn't hold a job. You go with me to any Gold Star mother and you look her in the eye and you tell her that her son did not hold a job. You go to Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I'd like to remember — and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job.

I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men, some men, who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose, a love of country, and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what has made this nation possible. I have held a job, Howard."

Glenn went on to defeat Metzenbaum in the primary and win the general election. He served in the Senate from 1974 to 1999.

    Default Honored

I had the honor of seeing him liftoff in the shuttle. He waved, and moments later, the rocket took off. Even as old as he was, courage like no other! The coolest thing leaving the planet, I can assure you! Think about this: my smartphone has more computing power than the entire spacecraft he rode to orbit the planet!!!! America has lost a treasure! Godspeed, John Glenn; you are the RIGHT STUFF!!!!

Decades ago when I was in radio, I had the pleasure of interviewing the Senator. He was very "down to earth" and a pleasure to talk with.

so today i learned something new about JOHN GLENN. when he first went into space, and orbited the earth 3 times, he never saw earth from space. so at 77 years old, NASA allowed him to go up in a shuttle and he saw earth from space for the first time
