Finally found what to replace the safety card with...
Having got myself a radar detector I couldn't work out where to mount it as I didn't want it on my bars, particularly as I'm sorting out a hand brake at the moment. I've also already got a RAM phone mount that's taking up a lot of space. Instructions said it had to be mounted somewhere level with a view to the front, it could be behind Perspex but nothing opaque.
Then I had a brainwave - I removed the screen, shade and safety card, then fixed a length of aluminum there instead that I slightly curved to match the lines of the panel. At the end I put a kink in it to give me the level mounting surface. I mounted this with counter sunk bolts through the grove normally used by the safety card which meant I could adjust it up and down if I didn't get the height quite right first time.
A bit of black paint on the bit's that may show, added the mounting plate, ran the cables and then put it all back together. Radar detector is out of the way of dials and as high as possible while still being protected by the screen and to my mind looks nice a neat + everything can be returned to normal easily if required.
what accessory/method are you using for it to alert you ???
Just mounted the visual indicator that came with the detector under the shade over the clocks to one side of the alarm. Tested it out and it's very bright so I suspect it will catch my eye (the little red light on my usb plug does and that's below the clocks, I have to cover that with tape at night:-)). The radar detector also has a loud warning sound but being deaf I'd probably not hear it above the engine etc when riding. They do have a remote system you can fit to your helmet but I didn't bother.
Super idea ! I have been wondering how to mount my dash cam I received for Christmas. This gives me a new approach. The mount that came with it won't quite work on a curved windscreen.
They are illegal to use or have mounted in your vehicle here in most states. New LEO radar is instantaneous with a trigger and then shuts off signal until next time trigger is pulled. Not too useful especially if the LEO see's it mounted in your vehicle. Two tickets then, one for having a radar detector and one for speeding. Be careful out there and don't be in too much of a rush to get a ticket.

They are legal in NZ so that's not an issue. My mate who's a cop says the policy used to be if you were stupid enough to get done for speeding while you have one then don't expect the cop to let you off the speeding ticket:-) However with the new automated systems they can't let you off now anyway.
I've got it because having ridden 30 years without a ticket for anything I got my second speeding ticket within 4 years a few days ago. Same way twice, stuck behind a car doing 85-90kmph in the outside lane with even slower truck on the inside - finally it pulls in and I open it up to get past both before the two lane section ends - police car parked up that was hidden behind the truck. So my hope is that I'll just get a warning from the detector next time and put up with being behind Mr Slow until the next opportunity to pass.

I never worry about the detectors being
illegal because they are not mounted in view
of anyone, I have one in my truck mounted inside
a phony cab light on the roof, I have one in my
HHR mounted inside the grill and the one on my
ST1100 is under the fairing all work great and are
out of sight.

the noise from your air intake is enough to deafen anyone Josh . I would like to see your hand brake mod though once finished as I'm considering doing the same to mine.
