Brake fluid change and BUDS
Anyone done the DOT 4 brake fluid change. Was the BUDS program required?

Yes, just did it by pumping the brake. No BUDS needed. Turn on the key to release the park brake then shut off the key, beeping will stop after a little while. Then bleed as normal.

2013 and the newer RTs have the exact same brake system. Regardless, the above answer is correct. There really is no reason to cycle the abs unit with buds as part of a regular flush and bleed. Only if air is introduced into the system.

PK,
Is it too difficult to share here with us folks who don't do Facebook? Thanks

I agree. I personally never had a Facebook account, but I finally decided to set one up so I could access this group. Well worth it. Strictly technical only topics here with lots of good information.

Hi!
Did a change on my 2008 GS SM last year.
Used an vacuum ejectorpump connected to my old aircompressor, worked like a dream
Did the clutch too, the fluid was really dark and dirty.

Would you have a photo of your set up?

As I see it...
The reason for the buds system is to clear the nanny control unit. You know the one that puts on the brakes and kills your fun.. seems doing it without leaves what's in there as the new fluid bypasses the system which only operates by computer/buds under those special conditions. Not to say you don't have the bulk of the fluid new and things will be refreshed and working like new. If you never met the nanny your fluid will be new in there...

Where is the ABS module located and does it have a standard bleeder screw?

The downside is, and I have learned this a long while back is to degas the fluid prior to bleeding. The ejector is not best for this operation. The fluid should be placed in a sealed glass jar with a means to pull near 30" of vacuum on the fluid. This will remove the micro bubbles. Fluid with micro bubbles will always have a softer or mushy feel when compared to degassed fluid.
Using the ejector to bleed degassed fluid into the system should be a great option.
I personally just use the Mightvac bleeder for all of it. Degas and bleed.
I have never used an ejector type bleeder but would suspect is could very easily drain the reservoirs dry if not careful.
All the best, whatever method you choose.

Yes it´s true that you have to be careful and refill the reservoir to prevent it from going dry, but it is not that difficult to do.
The ejector in the pic, well i live in sweden so you might not be interested in going that far for it but you should find it or simillar in a wellsorted carshop.

Two questions. I looked for the Spyder tech page on facebook but could not find it. Do you have a URL?
Where can I buy the Pentosin brake fluid? Does NAPA or AutoZone carry it?

Just went through the service manual and was following up with notes from experienced riders. I don't see where any fluid is bypassed by not finishing with BUDS. The VCM is flushed manually. Looked at the line diagrams and again couldn't find a line by passed. BUDS appears to be a pressure and functioning check, not a flushing operation.
Can you show me what's bypassed?

There are hydraulic lines running to the calibration module. (found in the electical components front) You can do the brakes and bleed the system without going there but if anything is pushed into this unit you can not operate it without the computer. Buds is used to do that. In the case that after doing brake work you find that you can still not bleed the system to work properly you need to have it checked by someone with the buds system...

Reviving an old thread for a bit...
dies anyone one know the book time for flushing the brake system? I was told that the spyder would be ready in 2 hours. Now they say it's a 6 hr operation. Yes, this is MMS so I expected to be lied to.

No way it is six hours. Not sure what the book time says. I would guess about and hour. If you had a lift like most shops do, they can prob do it under an hour.

The flat rate manual calls for 3.4 hours. Since that is determined by doing the job on a pristine bike, most shops will increase that by a percentage.

2016 RTS--Was told today $637 to do a brake flush without changing the brake pads. $125 per hr. Tax not included. 5-6 hr job.
Flushing it myself. Probably will not flush ABS module.

Well it looks like someone is trying to get rich off of service. The one time I had my dealer flush the brake system on our 2014 RT it was under $100.
