I'm creeping up on the first oil change, 3,000 miles. I'm going with Amsoil like I've used in all my other bikes. What is the correct wt, 10w 40 or 10w 30 for the 1330?

And the V-twin is turning about twice as fast as the 1330. The wear and tear from the transmission would be the same but the engine counts in there, too. I don't like the idea of using a "blend" which is what BRP is now doing rather that their full synthetic. I put full synthetic Amsoil in my 1330 at 1,000 miles and just did it again after 3K additional. Now I'll run a longer distance (still not 9K). Maybe then I'll get it analyzed.
I used Mobil 1 motorcycle oil for about 100K in my Gold Wing and also in my 650 V-Strom. Good stuff as much as I can tell. I believe, but can't prove, my 'Wing used less oil with the Mobil 1 than when I ran Amsoil in it. That's based on how many additions I made on cross country trips. But I have no analysis or factual data to prove that. I would use it in the Spyder but it's only JASO MA1 not MA2. Since the V-twins had a few cases of clutch slipping, I don't want to take a chance on anything less than JASO MA2. Maybe the 1330's won't have that problem but I don't feel like taking a chance. I wish BRP would come out with hard, fast specs including JASO instead of just saying, "Trust us. Use our oil. It's really good."
Thanks for the informative post. And let us know how the Mobil 1 does. That will be an interesting comparison.
I am new to spyder and a little confused with all the buz on oil. Approaching 1000 miles on my 2014 RT-S and planning to make my first oil change with Amsoil. Now the questions are, at what mileage and which Amsoil oil do I use? Your opinion is highly regarded and I would appreciate your response.

If you go with Amsoil, you want their 10/40 MOTORCYCLE Oil. It used to be called just 10-40 Motorcycle Oil. I see they are playing marketing games and the new stock is labeled 10-40 Metric Motorcycle Oil. I never try to understand the logic of marketing but if you see either one of these, that is what you want. As for mileage, you can read all the oil threads including this one and come to your own conclusions. Enjoy the RT -- great, fun machine.

Why do you feel the need to change the oil 2,000 miles early? Yes, I recognize Amsoil synthetic has a superior reputation but why the rush? BRP tested the out of their XPS Blend and it is good oil. There will probably be some small metal particles on the clutch cover drain plug magnet but that's what the magnet is there for. Unless you're going to have it analyzed to know how much the viscosity has sheared down its some effort to dump oil that has useful life in it. Are you willing to follow the manufacturer's recommended intervals, 3000 for first change and 9,300 thereafter, or are you going to follow an interval program that is based viscosity shear?

Had my first service done on my F3 at the dealer. Had them install Rotella T6. Runs much smoother and the shifting is smoother too. Lots of mechanical noise from the engine is gone. They commented that quite a number of their customers are using the Rotella in various bike models.
We will stick with the Valvoline Motorcycle oil in Louise 998.

Did you change to the XPS Full Synthetic? I got an email reply from XPS Lubricants that told me that the stuff in the Yellow Bottle is a 0W-40 product.

Amsoil is 10W40 metric full synthetic oil..I waited till my 3rd oil change before I went full synthetic. The amsoil oil really makes the quiet and smooth running IMO. Shifting is even less clunky..

I too saw Rotella on sale at Autozone for $14.99 but that was T5 which is NOT synthetic. T6 normally runs $26 at Autozone and $23 at Wallyworld. Perhaps your Autozon marked down the wrong one which would have been a great deal to snatch up.

I have never thought much of Amsoil's pyramid marketing scheme. In fact its one of the main reasons I avoid it. Also their refusal to test per API standards. It may be a great product but they cannot prove it and I won't buy what they are trying to push. The rest of the petroleum lubricants industry works to a set of standards and fosters the standards organization. Amsoil works around it and will never be mainstream because of that.

Our Wally World had the Shell T-6 on mark down for $14.50 for the 4qt. jug today. Mobil 1 5-40 was $26+.. Tom
