Fluid leak

I have an SE5 with a leak coming from somewhere and landing on the plastic shroud just forward of the brake pedal on the right side. I think its oil because I have to add about half a quart every 1500 miles (or maybe that’s normal.) I think I read somewhere that the leak could come from the air filter. Anyone out seen this problem?

Many have had leaks in that area - the leak has been from loose hose clamps - check all the hose clamps on the bike - I found 2 very loose, took over 3 turns to get the correct tightness.

Update: I took my spyder to the dealer and they said the leak is oil coming from the airbox, good call Lamonster. My dealer contacted BRP and their official answer is that it not considered to be a problem and to just clean it out at every 3K miles. Anyway, I just wanted to pass along that there still is no fix by way of BRP.

Lamont, what causes oil to get into the airbox to begin with?

Make sure and follow the oil level check procedure to the letter. oil will come from these areas if the oil level is too high. this is a dry oil sump system(completly different oil check procedure). I have had two Spyders do this. Lowering the oil to proper level will solve the problem.

I have had the best luck taking a ride getting the engine to operating temp. Shut the engine off and take the cover off. Restart the engine and let idle for a minute. Stop the engine and check the oil level.

I just found out that I too have oil in my airbox on my SM5.

I thought it was odd that my oil level was low and didn't see anything dripping/pooling on the ground of my garage or driveway.

I didn't think I was burning it.

So after talking to the guys yesterday at The Shed, I got a little brave and took some more panels off and got to the airbox. I opened it up and struck oil! So, I cleaned it up and put it all back together.

I know sabunim5 said something about putting filter material in the breathing tube. Is that the hose that comes into the cover of the airbox on the right side? What kind of filter?

I know Lamont is also using some kind of filter system. Is there a parts list and a step by step procedure to do this?

After I took off the upper forward side panels and the "gas tank" center panel, I could see the airbox cover. It took some doing but I was able to finagle the cover off under the center bar. It was pretty tight. Was there something else I was supposed to take off or is there an easier way?
