you sure you have your foot completely on the brake?

only happened to me twice and figured out pretty fast I didn't have enough pressure on the brake pedal. never have had an issue since.

Be sure that your Spyder is

    1) Motor is Running
    2) Stopped
    3) Foot firmly on brake
    4) Push and hold top round button while you pull the paddle shifter towards you.

If you are following these steps and it still wont go into reverse

    1) check your oil level
    2) take it to your dealer

If the bike is still moving when you hit the shift paddle, and you did that before you got the brake pressed, it won't shift. You then have to let off both the shift paddle and brake and start the sequence over.

If you are stopped you do not have to press the brake in order to shift into reverse. But you do have to press the brake to shift into 1st. At least that's the way it works with my 2014 RTS.

If your RPM is too high it will not go in reverse.

When I have trouble getting mine ready to back-up: it's normally because I'm not getting the "R" button and backshift paddle on the same page of the game plan...
Just make sure that you're stopped, and you've got your foot on the brake. (Who wants to try and shift without doing this?????)
FIRMLY press and hold down "R"
    Then hit the backshift paddle!

If you hit "R" and backshift at the same time: you ain't going anywhere!

My 2013 does this on occasion, and as Bob said, foot on brake, press "R" button, then hit paddle shifter. This has worked for me.
