    Default VSS issue. Help!

2014 RT. We are towing our trailer and we are getting a VSS code solid light. Book says to tow it to a dealer. We have no problems while riding. Is this something that can wait for a few days? Do we need to really tow it? Is the bike just going to shut down?

Park the bike.get all keys away from bike. Get away from bike at least 50 feet. Wait about 20 minutes and start bike. Maybe this will fix it. Worth trying.. Good luck and stay safe.

    Default Bummer...

sometimes it is only the angle that will toss you a warning. this is a start to see if it will clear and store the code but if all is operating normally and it does not go to the orange screen and limp home mode you should be fine. I have had the vss kick in on several sweeping banked turns and all was fine but the nanny did not agree. If the warning does not clear you could stop by any dealer and have them clear it with the buds system and see if anything is wrong.

The magical key walk is a myth. A very popular myth but still a myth. It is a total waste of time and effort. What is actually true is if you turn the key off for 30 seconds some types faults may change from active to occured. No need to remove the key at all.

Get the fault code. Press Mode, Set and Turn Cancel at the same time. The code can tell you where to look. Maybe something as simple as the pillion switch becoming unplugged.

Make sure the passenger seat sensor switch is plugged in. If it's not the VSS icon stays lit.

    NOTHING

turning the bike off and allowing the computer to reset will generally clear some problems, and removing the key while it resets is an accepted practice.

on the computer reset. The need to remove the key is highly questionable. But walking 50 feet away with the key? That defies logic.

Turning the bike off. Pulling the key out. Restarting (re-booting the computer) the engine--Sometimes--will clear the glitch. If the problem persists, you will need to call up the codes and see a dealer.

This works most of the time. I say this happens so that the computer can show you who is really in charge.

No Pam, there IS logic there, it's just that you aren't looking at it the right way!!

By pulling the key & walking at least 50 feet away it means that you are now too far away to kick or punch the bike in anger or frustration, &/or maybe even torch it cos this is the third DESS failure you've had today!! Furthermore, by walking off with the key in your hand, you can't sit there on the Spyder slamming the key back & forth in frustration until it breaks off in the slot!!

So like I said, there is good reason & logic behind walking away with the key, just not the reason that comes to mind immediately for most people!!

Just got back from my dealer and he diagnosed a faulty steering sensor for my annoying VSS orange screen. I have a 2016 RT S with 2800 miles. The faulty sensor isn't a safety concern but could make steering just a little more difficult, no lock up or failure. My previous dealer cleared to code and said everything was fine. This Master Tech just took it for a quick ride, pushed the handle bars back and forth, and low and behold the codes showed up. Sensor is on order but rode safely 75 miles home. At least now I know what ruined two beautiful rides and it will finally be taken care of. Hats off to Ryan at Hanover PA Motorsports.

My understanding of the Logic is most pistol ranges are set at 50feet. Those with CC permits ,isn't that the range when an possible attacker legaly becomes a Threat?
