SE5 Stuck in gear with engine off
Did I miss a memo?
Drove the wife's SE5 yesterday and backed into a parking spot and turned it off. Came out later to leave and was faced with:
- Can-Am in reverse when I turn the key on.
- Won't shift out of reverse with the engine not running
- Won't start while it is in reverse.
We rolled it, rocked it, tried lot's of configurations of shifting to try to get it into neutral, but with no engine, no good.
We finally broke open the manual and found that we can manually shift it with a 13mm wrench from under the body. We did that and got it into neutral so we could start it.
Really? Is that the solution? If you leave it in gear when you turn the engine off you need to get a wrench out and manually shift it into neutral to start the engine? Seems really kudgey if that is the solution.
Did I miss something? (Other than shifting into neutral before turning off the engine?)

This is a common problem from new riders of the SE5. If you cut it off on Gear you must use the Brake to start the machine. If it happens again make sure your using the brake if that doesn't work then i would say get it to the dealer.

or you can step on the brake
that will allow you to start your engine while spyder is in gear.

Yes, pressure on the brake should allow start in gear. If you are one of the unfortunate such as I, the 13mm wrench will become your best friend as the spyder gets stuck in one gear or another.

That's the info I was looking for! I guess I should have known that.
I was used to standing next to the spyder and starting it in Neutral with the parking brake on. Guess I should have been sitting on it with my foot on the brake.

this happened to me on the day i bought the spyder.
i went to fuel and could not get it started because it was on first gear so i called the dealer but salesman did not know, how mechanics didn't neither so they re-created the scenario at their end( turning off engine of spyder while in 1st gear) and played with it for like 10 minutes while i was on hold and finnaly said "PUT YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE"

OK, bone crusher, I have read numerous posts about your negative attitude about the SE5. And I am getting a bit annoyed. I have an SE5 because that's what I wanted. You never hear me post anything negative about the SM5. Those of us who have the SE5 have it because we WANTED it or it fit our needs, so we don't need to be haggled and told we should have gotten the SM5. You may not like this post, but I just thought I would let you know what I think of yours.

I had the same problem when we took a Demo ride on an SE5. I had not read the manual, so I called the dealer and was told about the foot brake. So, you're not the first to have this happen, and you won't be the last. Enjoy the Spyder. It's an awesome machine.

Maybe it's just hard for me to just "ignore" someone who is constantly bashing something we have. Some of us may have problems with the SE5, but we get on here to try and resolve questions we may have about our Spyder. He has written many times that we should have bought an SM5. No one is asking his opinion on what we should have bought. We are just asking questions about the SE5, or posting something that we learned that may help others. He thinks our problems would be solved by buying, or that we should have bought an SM5.

Dudley,
First of all, sarcasm was implied...now I have to correctly say that it was expressed on that post.
Second, I'm not bashing...I feel bad that the SE5 is having so many problems. For those who have one, I hope the problems can be rectified...unfortunately, BRP doesn't seem to be stepping up to the plate. As far as fitting your needs, that's a personal thing...however, we both know that nothing will fit your needs if it doesn't work.
If people are reading this board and are deciding on which Spyder to buy, I think it's safe to say that the SM5 is a better way to go...at least for now...I'm not making things up about the SE5...my bias is based on all that I read, and I think we can both agree that there are a disproportionate amount of problems with the SE5 vs. the SM5. You bought your bike and you should love it! I ride with friends who have Harleys and they don't even consider my Spyder to be a bike! So be it. If someone has disabilities or is in a very high traffic area, then the SE5 makes sense...however, caveat emptor...you have to be more prepared to deal with problems.
And for the record...I like your post...we are all entitled to our own opinions no matter what they are! Peace...

Ok i have to agree with dudley here. Its really getting old that every post that has anything to do with a SE5 you step in and bash them for one reason or another. You only "Hear" about problems here. Untill you have personally owned a SE5 and had problems with it why not just keep your comments to yourself. I have 6700 miles on my SE5 and have only had it in the shop for maintance/mods. And your most famous comment i see in EVERY post bashing the SE5 is "SM5 is more fun anyways" THat is your opinion and everyone has the right to there own opinion. ME i think SM and SE have the same fun factor. So my 2 cents is untill you OWN a SE5 you shouldn't bash them. Afterall if i went by what i read here i wouldn't own a spyder at all as all i seem to read is the bad on SE and SM.

I rode an SE5 at a demo day last summer and found it to be interesting. I didn't like not having the control to override the downshifting. It didn't have nearly the spunk that my SM5 has, but then again I've got some extras that don't make it a fair comparison (hindle, o2 mod, race airflow, fuel pressure mod).
I think they really should have made a system that still allowed manual shifting with a manual foot shifter and clutch if you so desired.
My dealer said he wasn't looking forward to selling the SE5's because they expected plenty of problems with them as they had with previous 'automatic' versions of BRP products.
Not that I was very interested in one, but at the time I ordered my Spyder there were three reasons I wouldn't have gone with the SE5:
1. Long wait to get them (heck, I had to wait a year to get my SM5). The SE5 would have been another 8 months.
2. $1,600 more.
3. Potential problems according to dealer.
#1 is no longer an issue.
I fully understand those that want the SE5 and think they can be great for many for various reasons (disabled, older riders, women riders, new riders or those that just flat out don't want to mess with a clutch).
Plenty of reasons for BRP to produce this model - just hope they can get these bugs worked out for you guys!

It's a bit frustrating to have to pay more money for my extended warranty because the SE5s are costing the company a lot of money. So, I don't need to own a SE5...they're costing all of us more money.
That's a fact...not opinion.
As far as not commenting on the woes of owning a SE5, I'll stop posting...we're going to have to get the 'beating a dead horse' graphic up here soon...
You don't need to tell me to keep my comments to myself...this is a sounding board for all opinions...both yours and mine...
