Starting Issue
Have a 2013 RT Limited. Has been running flawless since we purchased almost 2 months ago.
Saturday we went on a charity ride and parked it after the ride. Jumped on the Syder this evening to take an evening ride. Won't start.
The Spyder boots up and and appears to have plenty of juice. When you try to fire it up it clicks and flashes and won't start.
Things i I have tried:
Pushed in all fuses.
Put foot on the brake.
Checked the battery connections.
Nothing but flashing.
Any thoughts?

That was my first thought too, but he said it "clicks and flashes" when he tries to start, so I ruled that out.

Okay. Read the manual and did the jump start method with the wife's truck. Started right up.
So I am assuming it is a bad battery. Can anyone tell me a place to get a battery and how hard are they change.

I'd try jumping the Spyder off using another vehicle with jumper cables. If it starts its probably the battery going bad. Remember when jumping off your Spyder, the vehicle your going to jump the Spyder off with should have the engine turned off.

You'll just have to look around, online and local. Try to get the same battery as OEM. They're YUASA brand and general consensus is they are hard to beat for the price. Take care of them properly and they'll last a long time.
FYI, the battery has to put out at least 10.5 volts when you hit the starter. That's the threshold for the computer to be happy, and is quite a bit higher than what is needed to start many other bikes and vehicles. On your charity ride did you do a lot of slow speed riding? If so the battery may have just gotten sucked down too far. 2013 and earlier Spyders with the 998 engine do not put out a high enough charge at slow speed to really give a battery a good charge.

Well....
Looks like they got you covered. One other thing..could there have been anything left on or charging off a power port that vould have drained the battery. ? In which case you may just need a good charge

Thanks for all the assistance. I do have one other issue.
Last st nightni pulled the battery so I could take it in today. Well the schedule has changed and it may be a couple of days till I get a new one. So this morning I put the battery back in because I thought it might not be a good thing to lesve it unplugged that way.
WHen i I turned on the bike I noticed that I did not get a boot screen. It went right to the regular screen and the bike fired up. Did I do something to the electrical system?
-
Just clarify. The message where you have to hit the mode button is the one that does not come up.

if it starts & runs OK without any error messages, it's doubtful you did anything to the electrical system. What you have described sorta suggests that when you shut down last time it hadn't finished it's shut down routine before you pulled the plug; or maybe it hadn't completed the start-up routine before you pulled the battery out. Whichever, it could well be that your battery wasn't actually dead, but you only had a poor or dodgy terminal connection - & now you've re-installed the battery you've replaced that dodgy connection with a good connection, so it has completed the computer boot routine & started fine.
If you want to see if this is the case, try turning it off, shutting down properly & pulling the key out, waiting at least 10 mins, and then try starting it & getting it running again. If the battery is OK & the terminal connections are now good, it should work fine & do the normal start up routine with the 'press mode' thing etc, in which case you can probably just proceed to ryde!! If it doesn't start up or do the whole boot routine properly, then you do probably have that dud battery you were working towards replacing anyway.
It'll be interesting to hear what happens when you give this a try!

For some odd reason these bikes will start with out having to push the mode button at times.Give the batt a good charge then load test it.

When the battery is disconnected for a period of time. The first start after reconnecting the battery does not require a press of the mode button. A normal quirk.
Excuse me while I rant. What a stupid idea to push the mode button to start. BRP please fix this stupidity!!!!! Rant over.
I must be missing something or you have not shared all the information. Why do you think the battery is bad? It certainly could be bad. But at this point I don't think you can know. Whether it is bad or not it needs to be charged up. If it won't take a charge. Then it's bad. If it takes a charge take it to a reputable battery seller. In my part of the planet they will load test for free. If it fails the load test. They will be happy to sell you a new one.

Just in case you still have to wind up replacing your battery. Cruzr Joe gave me a good place to get a battery. O'reilly's stock ETX18L is a good replacement. I had battery issues last week and bought that one and been doing great every since.

Thanks for all the input.
I had the battery tested and they said it was good. I think I will buy a charger. Looking at the optimate 3.

Next step is to check the system voltage. Get out your volt meter or borrow one. Start your Spyder and let idle a couple minutes. Check the voltage across the jump start posts. It should be more than 14V. If not you may have a charging system problem.

It's sounding more & more like you just had a 'poor connection' issue on one of the battery terminals.
