MPG question
I have a 2012 RT SE5 -
Best MPG I have gotten is 31 mpg.
I am 6'2" 270, and besides loosing weight, can I ever expect getting better mpg?
I'm thinking if I change the air filter system and get rid of the CAM, I'll get better performance, plus better mpg.
-
Do you still have the 2012 RTS?
That's not too far off the nark. The 998s are usually in the 30, to 33 mpg range.
Of course: ALL of this depends upon how your right wrist is dancing with the "loud grip".
Are you willing to slow down by 5 mph?

At the risk of sounding ignorant what is the CAM you are contemplating getting rid of?
-
If he gets rid of the camshaft; he won't burn any fuel...
I'm guessing, that he was referring to the catalytic converter...

I really doubt there is much one can do to move the MPG up substantially while maintaining the performance level.
31mpg is a bit lower than I was getting with my 2010 but the mpg seemed to climb a bit after 30K
-
The biggest thing that you can do, is slow down...
Even with my 2014 RT; riding at 80 mph, I got 33 mpg.
Riding at 60 mph: I get 40 mpg!

30 is about what I average unless I'm in the mountains, then it's down to 25.

Best I've gotten with my '12 RTS has been 33, and that was riding back roads, 30 to 40 mph, and never getting above 3rd gear!!!!

If you drop from 270 # to 130 # you might gain 1 or 2 mpg.

1100 Mile Test
Over the past 1100 miles, I have only averaged 28 MPG. This really reduces my range to about 120 miles until the fuel light comes on. Hopefully my MPG will improve when I get more miles on the unit. Currently it only has 10K.

We get around 32 on our 2012. I don't see a problem with it, 140 to 150 miles is the range before stopping for gas for us. stock air box, cat and muffler still there. We did add a K&N air filter, now at 28,000 miles.

Good to hear, but not much incentive to loose the weight.[emoji4]

Just got back from a 1900 mile trip. My mileage was from a low of 32 to a high of 48. The only difference between the high and the low was speed I was craving. Traveling at 80 on the interstate yo will do good to get 32. Traveling on the back roads with a 55 speed limit and you will get up to 48.. I have to say that 48 is the best that I have ever had.

Sounds like the kind of mileage you would get with your 2014. The OP has a 2012. Different motor.

My mileage is way lower
Hmm. Now I am not pleased. I have had my 2012 RTL since Memorial Day, and this morning I confirmed that I am getting about 21 mpg. From what I have been reading, I should be getting much more. Heck, 21mpg is not much better than my Honda Ridgeline at 16mpg.
Obviously, something is not right. Where do I start?

My 2013 RT ranged from a low of less than 25 mpg at 70+ pulling a trailer to a high of 28 with no trailer and driving at 55 to 60 mph. This was over about 25,000 miles total running ethanol gas. I don't recall that regular vs premium made any real difference.

The machine is stock, except for the bajaron swaybar and links that I added. It was serviced by the dealer before going on the sales floor- oil change, 10-star (whatever that is), rear brake pads, new rear tire, brake fluid flush.
I am a pretty conservative rider, and because this is all new to me, I have been even more so. As far as payload, it's just me @190 lbs. My computer bag is in the frunk.

I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'm thinking I should open another one in the RT ShopTalk forum. Please don't think I'm cross-posting; that's even more annoying than hijacking!
