    Default F3T & F3 Limited glovebox

I just thought I would post a warning to those using there glove box to plug there electronic device into there radio. IT GETS PRETTY HOT IN THERE. After about 200 + miles yesterday in 90 degree heat I was almost home and my music stops. I tried to restart it but my phone was shut off and it would not turn on. When I got home and removed the phone it was HOT! And dead. IT would not turn on period even after putting in the fridge for an hour and & I plugged it into the wall outlet for a couple hours also nothing.

This morning I was almost ready to head to the Verizon store to activate a spare phone we had in the house and my old phone suddenly turns on and works perfectly?? I went for a 60 mile ride again today and the phone was again very hot when I got home.

I do not intend to keep my phone in the glove box. I ordered a new RAM mount a few weeks ago that has just been released and finally shipped last Friday so I will again put it on my X grip when the mount arrives later this week.

Also the phone was just fine in the glove box until it got into the 90's and then it lasted almost the entire day before it died. It was also plugged into the usb connector so it was charging at the time.

Do you have any way to measure the temperatures in and around the glovebox?
I wonder if it could be just from the sunshine; or is engine compartment heat finding it's way into the equation?

I think the heat in the glovebox is generated by the halogen headlights

    Default In my limited experience

(no pun intended ) I have been riding in 90+ degree heat the past week and although i don't keep my phone in the glove box (i use Lamonster X-Grip), I have sun & regular glasses, 2 USB dongles - txmit & rec, and remote for floodlights by my garage, and have NEVER noticed any particular heat problem. Warm because of the sun, yes. Hot or excessive heat, no.

As I already mentioned I have an X grip, just waiting for the new RAM ball mount to arrive that I ordered to arrive, it shipped on Friday.

Not a big deal really, just wanted everyone to know that there is some heat there and it could possibly harm your electronic devices that you might put in there. It could be some headlight heat combined with the bright sun .

Info is always a good thing. Better to know something 'may' be up rather than not check it out and find out the hard way.

200 miles today, mid 80's and my phone and glove box just warm not hot like on Saturday. I am thinking when it is really warm and the sun just beats down on the lid of the glove box it just gets hot in there and it may also get some heat from the headlights.

yes I did think of that this morning, a some heat will come from the heat sink's on the headlights.

Might want to have your phone checked. I put 300 miles in over the weekend and it was 94° here. My phone never got hot in the glovebox and I have it loaded with all kinds of stuff. I even kept my snacks in there and they were just fine.

    I also have LED headlamps

    Default Thermal laser...

If you have one or can borrow one you can measure the heat. Throw a meat thermometer in there on your next ryde... I do agree that the phone may have an issue or your air flow has been restricted....

I'm sure the x-grip will solve the phone issue but does make you wonder what you can safely store in there...

You very well could be right about a phone issue. I don't know! I don't have another phone or another Spyder to test it. Just wanted others to know about my issue and hopefully more people report no heat issue in there.

    Hi Tom,
I think that you'd be okay; riding around with it just "sitting" on it's latch...
But there's no guarantees about what a bumpy road might do!

At highway speeds if it is not latched correctly the wind will suck it open and pull it up against the inside of the windshield.

    Default Phone problem I think

Went for a short ride today after work. Just 20 miles or so. Phone in glove box, USB plugged in and Aux cable plugged in streaming music. The phone felt extremely warm considering the short amount of time it was in there, but when I stuck my hand in the glove box the walls of the box were warm but barely and not nearly as warm as my phone.

My new RAM ball mount should be here tomorrow or Friday. Problem will be solved, my phone will again be air cooled.

Thanks Lamont. But I purchased 590 GPS with my Limited so I can already Bluetooth thru the GPS. Just waiting for my new RAM mount to arrive so everything is at my fingertip.

On another note I really hope we run into you and Joan at Lake George next week. We will arrive at Moose Hillock campground Monday afternoon.

I just rode 105 miles home and it got hot so I left the lid open and the lid blew open and locked open. My phone stayed put and didn't get hot. Thinking of a mesh net bag to hold it in and a way to keep the lid open but not all the way.

You folks who are having heat problems, was your fone plugged in to the USB? Some fones won't go to "sleep" and the screen is on all the time if you've plugged them into a power source. Some fones have a setting like "(don't) turn off the screen if plugged in" or something like that. I won't put my fone in the glove box. I do, however, use an iPod Touch for my music.

When using the BRP C app in the dash the phone stays on but goes dark. When using it as a GPS, the screen stays on.

I'm wondering if it's the cable. I was using an aftermarket 6" cable and I'm going to try an Apple cable and see if it gets hot. Living in the SF Bay Area, it's be a while before it gets up to the 90's.

Yesterday I tried the Apple .5m cable. It got to 100° and I had the phone in the glovebox and the lid closed. Got stuck in almost dead stop traffic going uphill, 2 lanes merging into 1. The phone did just fine. Music continued to play with GPS on as well.

The 6” cable I used first off was an aftermarket one which allows for data as well as power. Don’t know why, but can the cable make that much difference?

Did some research and it seems that cables can make a difference. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mob...created-equal/
