    Default Battery charging

Hubby drained my battery listening to the radio. It's been on a tender for almost 24 hours and still won't start. What's the best way to charge it? Yes, I know he was stupid to do this, but I need to know how to fix it.

    Default Battery

See if it can be jump started from your 4 wheel vehicle with jumper cables. If you try this do not start the car! Just hookup the cables, wait a few minutes and then try to start your Spyder. If that doesn't work it may be time for a new battery.

I hope the battery isn't bad. I just bought the bike new in February and it only has 3000 miles on it.

I think jump starting with your car will work. Try it and let us know.

I had this happen the other night while I had bike on but not running. Battery drained down to 11.4 volts which is a full discharge. Bought a Battery Tender brand charger/tender at Walmart. Plugged it in around 9pm and by 10am is started fine. The one I used was a 1.25amp charger. The strength of the charger will dictate the charging time. The battery is around a 22ah battery. You should have at least 80% charge to start. Depending on strength of your charger and how depleted battery was it could take a while. If battery went to < 3v it's probably bad. If you do jump start it you need to ride it for a while for battery to recharge. If you jump it and go a short distance and shut bike off it likely won't start again.

    Default Here's the thing....

Battery tenders will not charge a dead battery. You need a regular charger or charge it from the engine. As mentioned above you can jump start it from a car but with the engine off. Then take a nice long ryde without turning it off. Battery should be fine.....

Battery tenders are great for maintaining a charge, but once it gets below that level, a good battery charger is needed. I have a Genius, believe the model is 3500 that will also desulfate a battery. It has brought back a battery that was so badly discharged that I had to hook it to another battery just to get the charger to recognize it at first.

if your battey is discharged and you jump start it then drive it to charge you will not be able to return it to more then 80% capacity. If you leave it like this it will shorten the life of your battery and work your charging system too much. Get a proper charger and and charge it fully. Then you can maintain it with riding or the tender.

Like spydersteve said the more expensive battery tender maintainer/charger will charge a battery. The less expensive battery tender junior is just a maintainer.

Thanks for all of your help! We found out that the battery tender had a blown fuse. We hooked up a battery charger and carefully watched it. Got it fully charged and the bike started.

Its actually not too stupid. Its actually a good thing as batteries develop a memory if left on a charger or kept fully charged all the time. The best thing to do is find a good 5 stage charger/tender to use instead of just a trickle charger type. I have a extreme brand purchased off amazon.
