    Default Brief overheating problem

2014 RTL with 21k miles, 2k since last service
Sitting at a red light and noticed fans come on and gauge showing overheating. Pulled into the first side street and temp immediately comes down and fans go off. Rode the rest of the day with no problem. NothIng leaking. Anyone have this happen? Concerned about Leaving for 700 mile trip home to Texas from Colorado.

    1. Check fluids & tire pressures.
    2. Start bike.
    3. Hold on.
    4. Full throttle.
    5. Repeat 3-5.

sitting at a red light, occasionally my fans will kick on too. that's what they are there for.

Please be more descriptive of the what the gauge showed. Was the reading all the way up at the top in the red zone or just a bit above half scale on the warm side?

This all sounds like the normal operation of the system...
Where does "showing overheating" fall of the gauge?

    Default Let's see....

I believe all spyders fans kick in when at full operating temp if not moving. When working on mine in the garage at 5 bars the fan kicks on as well as in traffic. But on the road it will get to 5 bars but the fan will not come on.... We all know the analog stories though they say they are better...

The gauge went all the way to the top and fans came on. When I pulled over the gauge immediately went to Norma and fans turned off. Since the gauge came down immediately and not slowly I think it was a temporary sensor problem and not actually overheating. I rode 360 miles today including stop and go traffic in 86 degree heat with no problems.

Update - dealer service said it was probably an air bubble briefly affecting the sensor especially at higher altitudes.
    No problems since

Glad to hear that an explanation was found, and it hasn't re-occurred!

Same thing happen to me in Durango after riding over a 9000 ft pass. Fan ran hard and temp up in red zone. Stopped and opened cap. Was not spewing out. Added a little water and ran fine all the way home (2000 miles). 2014 RTL

You gotta look at the dates before you post a reply, otherwise you might just be doing some pointless thread archeology! The post you quoted above inspectsir, was posted in May 2016....

Agreed... If the OP has not had a problem since 2016, I'd say he's OK...

    2014 but only 21K miles.
OK, so you have a 9 year old bike with only 21K
    BUT
When was the last time the coolant was changed?
Keep watch out and if the gauge does that again, seriously think about changing the coolant IF it has not previously been done.
I'm saying this from a Been There Done That Experience! LOL

That was posted back in 2016 AJ

Way back then, the OP had a TWO year old bike with 21K Miles, and as BajaRon posted in post #13:

..... If the OP has not had a problem since 2016, I'd say he's OK...
