Some folks would have you believe that you really need to do this. But; the centrifugal clutch locks up between 2500 and 2800 rpms. The nanny automatically downshifts at 2500 rpms at which point you can twist the throttle to your hearts desire. (and the nanny has all the answers) Therefore any shift up or down in that range is good. If you want quicker acceleration, of course you will want to shift at higher revs.

I would always shift around 4500 to 5000, no matter what gear you were upshifting to.

When I finally "saw the light" with my 2010 RT; I started upshifting in the 4800 to 5200 rpm range.

It is in the manual where the clutch locks at 3,000 (+/- 200) for the 900 series 5-speed. The auto down shift may shift at 2500, but that is a downshift, not an up shift. A big difference.

As you're coasting down, and the revs are dropping; there's no load on the clutch.

    Default Here's the thing....

The new triple 1330 has a much lower rpm clutch system. (hydraulic) but your model and year the lowest recommended was 3,400 most just rounded to 4,000. The 998 twins are happiest at high rpms and my RS runs with a grin at 5 to 6,000. I don't hit 5th gear till I'm over 70. If you ryde at under the 3,400 rpm you are wearing the clutch out prematurely...

Welcome to the group, glad you found your way here! if you haven't already read the "Do's and Don'ts", please take the time. It will make a word of difference on your first ride. Many questions are answered here:

Shifting on the SE5 and the "death grip" are discussed. These two topics are probably the most important to start with.

Whatever rpm you decide to shift, don't release the throttle. simply hold your right hand steady and tap the button. All is good.
