Default Installed Air Intake from JT's Spyder Store

No chance to ride yet, but here's some install pics. Great, quality made kit. Good instructions and install video online. Real pain was removing the RT airbox and resonating chamber. I opted for the extra outer foam filter.. cuts down on noise, filters a bit better.

This is the kit from JT Spyder store.. one of the site sponsors out here. I ordered it on a Friday and was shocked to get it on Monday.

My main reason for doing this was to have easier access to the engine. Changing the front plug would be a royal pain...but now it's a piece of cake.

Got one of his boxes used off here and put it on last year, love it! and if I'm ever curious about stuff now I can see it and pull plugs I couldn't get to before. Got the exact same color 2012...

    Nope.
Nor is the inner filter as it is a paper filter.

Awesome! I love the JT air cleaner setup!
Did you do the engine cooling/air ducting mod to your bike yet?
    1. Check fluids & tire pressures.
    2. Start bike.
    3. Hold on.
    4. Full throttle.
    5. Repeat 3-5.

I have all the parts... Just no time to do it right now. I did remove the resonating chamber.. What a pain that was!

    Hey Guys,
Have JT's Air Filter coming to me shortly. I live in the UK.
Have been looking for an install video, but no joy so far.
I'm sure the accompanying instructions will be fine, but always good to have as much information as possible.
Any and all assistance would be appreciated.
    Regards

Hey guys, is it necessary to remove the resonating chamber. If its as much a pain as getting the air box out, why do it. Also why remove the air intake. Seems like that would just bring in cool air to help keep engine temp down.

I removed all of the air handling plastic. I figured, while you're there, why not? You will be amazed at the view and ease of access you will have. You will need to take a good part of the left side structure to remove the resonator.

I know I have read you need to take the whole front off to get the resonator out. What exactly is its function and if you install the JT filter, will it throw codes if you leave it in the bike.

You can leave the resonator in or take it out. No codes either way. It just takes up space.

What are the benefits of the air box install. Being able to get to things would be great. Any performance benes?

Funny you should ask. My Butt Dyno says it's a little snappier, but I don't have any written proof. It definitely did not hurt.

I put the JT Air Cleaner on my 2013 STS.
As others have stated removing the Air Box was tricky.
Removing the resonator was nearly impossible but accomplished with sweat and tears.
It really opens up the area above the motor. Changing the plugs is a breeze.
I do believe the motor noise is now louder as she barks on acceleration.
    Well worth the effort

While it looks great I think with removal of the airbox and cold air intake your gonna have possible running issues.. Engines love cold air feed and need it to run efficiently.. while you have made it easier to access your plugs, your spyder is going to be sucking hot less dense air inside that oven we call bodywork [heat soak here in the UK]... thus being less efficient. Keep us posted how it goes as I'm interested to see what effects it has on performance and gas mileage when hot.

Curlytops, I've ridden in extreme heat and cold with no degradation in performance.

I really like my JT Intake System. As mentioned above, it really opens up the engine compartment. The huge, OEM air box takes up a LOT of room, is always in the way, and is a bear to remove and a pain to replace. These points alone make the price of the JT Intake System worth doing. And the intake, though designed to suck up ambient air which is a good thing, is pretty restrictive.

I think this JT mod does increase power and throttle response. It is not a big difference. So don't expect it to blow your socks off in the performance department.

Increased sound. It does, definitely, create more intake noise. But with the optional Pre-Filter (highly recommended), the additional throttle body volume is not only reasonable, it sounds AWESOME when you want it to!

At idle, during normal riding, and at cruise, the additional sound is not all that noticeable. Nor is it irritating. When ridden more aggressively, and at WOT, the increased volume is very noticeable. But it has a very mean, throaty growl to it. I like it! Not something that you'd want to hear all the time. But on the occasional (Go Fast) event, I think it's great! However, I find that without the noise dampening Pre-Filter, to me, it is obnoxious. It is impressive how that the piece of foam really mellows out the sounds coming from the intake.

I did one little mod to my JT Intake System mod (Modded the Mod, so to speak). I cut the velocity stacks off of the OEM air box and glued/screwed them to the top of the lower plate. This, theoretically, will smooth the airflow over the sharp edges of the lower plate, reducing turbulence and increasing the volume of air flowing into the throttle bodies. Does it actually do any good? Who knows! But I feel better about it, and enjoyed the project. I just hate leaving well enough alone! I'm the guy that fixes it, even when it's not broken.

Hey Ron, that was an interesting idea. Some people think outside the box and then some don't have any idea where the box is.
