Hi All,
I am thinking of buying a luggage buddy and just want to know how it affects your ride. I am looking at the luggage buddy because I don't think I will be doing a lot of long distance riding to warrant buying a trailer. Your comments are needed. Thanks.
....Max total weight, is 40 lbs.,.....and what ever is back there is going to get pounded and filthy.....Get past that it's probably great................JMHO, Mike

Fairy Nuff! But even 40 pounds behind the rear wheel axle is going to have negative consequences, I believe.
Isn't 40 pounds the maximum tongue weight on an RT??
I got the 80# from the FAQ where they stated it was used on a 2014RT for 3700 miles with no problems. I would not get one for my own personal reasons, no matter what it was rated at.
For the rider that needs just a little bit more storage capacity; it will probably work great...
But Mike is right; it's gonna be right down in the road grime, so pack and plan accordingly!
And please use the 40 pound limit for it!
On our first long trip, since I didn't have any sort of a trailer and needed a place to carry my crutches and one small additional bag, we used a $120 version of this same idea. Smaller rack but it served our purposes.
Never knew it was back there, loaded with maybe 20 lbs max. Beat the heck out of my ladyfriend carrying the crutches across her lap for 900 miles!
Funny incident at the Canadian border leaving Michigan for Ontario: border guy was the usual deadpan kinda guy until he asked if I happened to have my tag memorized. Admitting I didn't, I started to dismount and go read it to him, but he kindly came out of his booth and went to the rear of the bike.
Seeing the crutches, his attitude immediately softened, and he speeded us on through the Q&A and on our way with a kind smile.
I'm now way past needing crutches, following a total ankle replacement last July, and normally leave the rack off.......but it's easy to pop back on if a need arises. Sometimes stuff is just not amenable to normal packing.

Thanks for the comment. I guess I will have to add a mud flap I had not thought about. my things getting dirty. I thought the weight would affect the ride but I can't justifying a trailer if I don't plan a lot of long distance trips.

You will want to add the mud flap in any case. The Spyder throws up quite a rooster tail, and the way the wind whips around the bike mud & water fly all the way to the back of your head!
Are you riding solo, or two up? If solo you can easily pack enough in the bike storage and on the back seat to take care of you for days. If riding two up see if you can thin down your load and add a rack to the top of your rear trunk. As Mike said the swing arm and hitch bounces and shakes a lot. You could easily carry a can of cream back there and have butter by the end of the day!
2014 Copper RTS
Tri-Axis bars, CB, BajaRon sway bar & shock adjusters, SpyderPop's Bumpskid, NBV peg brackets, LED headlights and modulator, Wolo trumpet air horns, trailer hitch, custom trailer harness, high mount turn signals, Custom Dynamics brake light, LED turn signal lights on mirrors, LED strip light for a dash light, garage door opener, LED lights in frunk, trunk, and saddlebags, RAM mounts and cradles for tablet (for GPS) and phone (for music), and Smooth Spyder belt tensioner.
Great if you bolt a Rubbermaid tub on. Rain gear, jackets, gloves, laundry. Stuff that is bulky but light. Move the tag to the rear of the tub. That cargo will cube out before it weighs too much.
Compare to roadster renovations spyder rack. & pack. http://dochumphreys.wix.com/roadster#!products/cdk6
Better engineered for spyders not spyder & atv's Talk with doc
Personal opinion , the rack looks better

JT mentioned that he was working on a design that didn't require having a hitch on the bike.
I wonder how he's coming along with it?
I would be interested in that. I never travel enough to use a trailer. But once a year, the wife and I go on a 4-5 day trip and some extra room would be nice. Right now I am looking at getting a hitch and using a Doc Humphreys rack. His seems to be really nicely made and brings the load further up front than the others.

It is great for the occational user. It also works well but you do have to know and pack accordingly. If you ever follow a fellow ryder with a hitch you can see the amount of movement going on. Dew to the location it needs to be seal tight to protects your stuff. Plus it is easy to store then if not this you can look into soft luggage...
