Limp home mode
I am getting a check engine light, a message "Limp Home Mode". Also, the exhaust is really loud and there is a funny odor (No, not me).
I hate to ask what this is

Sounds like time to check exhaust gaskets

Have to agree...
you have the header gaskets and the Y gaskets as well as the muffler. Some have had the exhaust pipe crack. I would think it would be the header or Y gaskets to get that message. might check the o2 sensors as well...

I ride moderately. But I do ride in the cold. Last time I rode it it was 20 F.
Also, I will have to have it towed, will Can Am cover the towing charge?

You need to pull up the error code and see what the error is. You may not need to have it towed. Limp mode allows you to ride it but at reduced rpm so as not to damage the engine. If you do have to have it towed you will need your BEST warranty card, it gives you the phone number to call for towing. They don't pay for a very long tow though. It is limited by $$ and they don't get you very far. I sent you a PM with instructions on pulling up error codes.

I believe the current warranty allows up to $200.00 per tow. you have to call up front and get approval.

stebrock is correct, Can-Am Roadside assistance will cover up to $200.00. If you have Roadside assistance with your insurance, it will probably be better. Mine covers up to $500.00 per occurrence.

Rotten eggs?
If that smell is similar to Rotten Eggs, then the internal part of the Catalytic Converter has gone bad. When this happens, it tends to block the flow of the exhaust gasses also and will change the sound of the exhaust. Only fix is to replace it or bypass it.

All of these posts are assuming that you have a stock muffler, if you have a non OEM muffler than its a whole new ballgame, possibly without any warranty assistance.

Well, its been in the shop almost two weeks. They say they are replacing the injectors and cylinder heads. They had to send the computer module to CanAm because there equipment could not find the 'Limp Home' error. It only has 8.5K miles on it. I hope this is not an indication of the units reliability.

I hope that they gave you a loaner bike.
I have over 11 k on my F3S so far no issues other than heat on the legs when it's over 90 degrees outside.
Good luck, please keep us posted.

Well, I got it back. They say it was an ignition coil. The reason it was a head scratcher is the computer was lying to them. First off, the F3 computer did not register the 'Limp Home' diagnostics. They consulted Can Am a few times, then finally send the computer to Can Am. When Can Am hooked it up, the computer said the problem was the number three ignition coil. They replaced it but the problem persisted. So finally they just did a process of elimination, replacing each coil and see what it did. It turns out the number one coil was bad. When that happens, the piston stops working and the F3 runs on just the remaining two cylinders. That is why the power was down and the noise was way up. There was no issue with the muffler or headers.
