    Default CQ CQ Hello CQ

Well a lot has been written about using and setting up CB with Sena etc.

Has any "HAM" setup an HT unit on their Spyder?

Did you go 2M, 2m/440, 2m/70cm, something else?

Did you go with a Icom, Yaesu, Kenwood, or opt for some of those interesting "cheapies"?

Thanks for the input and thoughts

    AJ, N1BCK

    k9bea here!

I have a handheld Quansheng (cheap Chinese) 2m/70cm/FRS/GMRS/MURS radio.

The radio was well under $100, and does most everything but CB bands.

In my winter project pile, I've got a Comet CA-2x4SRNMO antenna antenna that I'll be mounting.

The radio is connected to a Sena SR10, and then via bluetooth to my Cardio Packtalk headset.

I have been waiting for a simple solution for ham radio on the Spyder. Most likely 2 meter. The GWRRA folks are big on the CBs. (Children's Band)

I run HF in my truck while cruising around. Made a lot of contacts to Canada on the way back from the owner's event on Durango in 2014. I also have a 2 meter in there too.

    73's !!!!!!

    KF6GUW, Amateur Extra here.

On a bike, I have carried a few HT's, in 2m-440 and 220 but just use the built in batteries and charge at night when traveling.

In my Cage, I have been known to "Piggy-back" an HF (Alinco DX70-100watts-50 watts on 6M) and an ICOM 60 watt, 2M-440 on the bottom.

My 2M-440 has a dedicated mag-mount for the pickup. UHF-VHF is the ticket in town especially in most areas with lots of repeaters. Simplex handles the rest.

MY Alinco HF has a Diawa 6 position coax switch, running to 6 'Ham sticks,' in various bands, normally tuned to perfection in the center of the band or tuned to a dedicated frequency for the net I peruse. HF is much safer if you are out riding in rural areas as distance is no concern normally.

On a bike I have always just pulled over to the side of the road to chat.

    Easy is not a problem

I know WHAT I'm going to do, just a matter of WHICH HT.
Think I'll be going with the Baofeng F9 with the Nagoya NA-771

Going with Lamont's "Cuff", then adding RAM mounts to top.
I already have installed a lighter socket in the left speaker panel.
On the right of the holder, will strap a Sena SR10 paired as a second phone to my Sena 20S headset (second phone because already have SM10 streaming everything else
Will plug HT and SR10 into socket.

Would be nice if Bob finishes his work on using the built in PTT switch but don't think it's going to happen.

So when traveling in a "group" will drop in the Midland CB for bike to bike and when Lone Wolfing it, drop in the HT.

Here's a few pictures of my mount. It's a RAM mount that clamps on the left handlebar just inside of the controls.

The SR10 is connected to the back of the RAM mount, and thanks to Doc, I've got a cable that connects the Can AM on-board entertainment system to the SR10. (AM/FM/iPod)

The PTT is mounted on the left grip.

I would love to put my DMR CS700 on mine at some point. We have a large MotoTrbo network here in NC. Getting a bluetooth adapter for the CS700 is high on my list this year.

I mounted my antenna over the weekend, and now have a real one, instead of the rubber ducky. It's mounted on my 2015 RT-S in the pre-existing cut-out that is for the CB antenna. The only modifications were drilling a hole in the left speaker box assembly so I could run the cable under the seat and up to the radio. I also made the bend in the antenna, so the angle of it actually matches the angle of the FM antenna on the other side (and it doesn't stick straight out the back.

I also installed my new license plate. In Oregon, we can have amateur radio call sign plates on motorcycles. Woohoo!

    Default Mountain top Repeaters

We are blessed with mountain top repeaters and thus the low power cheep systems work well. Rubber ducky and all. A good number of Spyder ryders are Blue Tooth. I have found vhf/uhf wired to brain bucket works best. I may try the Sena coupling. ar de W4EH.

    Lightbulb

    Hi, KA2PFL and N2GUU here.
This is the Ham radio on our 2015 RTL. The Radio is installed in the trunk (so I do not fiddle while Spydering down the road).

The antenna is mounted here with a metal plate under it for strength.

It was installed above the Chicken Band hole so it would line up with the AM/FM antenna like this. I took the photo at an angle, but side on both antennas are in line.

The radio is connected to a Sena SR10 mounted here. I wired the PTT to the Spyders PTT switch on the handlebar.

It works great, but kind of missing the 30 watts of a mobile dual bander.

You can get to the PTT button, but you will have to cut the flex circuit and carefully solder to the plastic based flex circuit without melting it. If you want I can post a picture of the switch and flex circuit.

Yes, I just popped out the plug, and used a panel-mount NMO mount for the antenna base.

I would imagine that HF would make the overly finicky electrical system on the Can Am Spyder have a meltdown. It is bad enough on a car or truck.

    No problem !

I was not sure LOTS of people do HF mobile. A screw driver antenna on a motorcycle would be a head turner !!!!

I have added an APRS to my RT. Put the unit in the trunk. Bytonics all in 1 unit and got a stubby mini mag mount and Velcro it to the top of the plastic behind the seat. I built a little ledge to hold the GPS puck and unit. As far as radios go, I use a VX-7 and the ear mike from MFJ.
