How to pack for Spyderfest

Ok, I should probably post this in the ST forum, but I think I will get more responses in the general forum. As some of you know, I am new to this forum and Spyders. The only regret I have with buying my ST-S is the lack of storage that comes stock with the bike. So my questions is, has anyone done an extended trip on and ST-S, RS, F-3 without any additional storage options? How did it work out? I am leaning toward coming to Spyderfest from the DC area and it will be my first long distance trip. Eventually I will purchase some saddlebags, but right now I have what I have. Had I known how much I enjoy riding my Spyder, I would have just taken the plunge and bought an RT or other touring model.

Any advise from you seasoned spyder pilots is appreciated.

I'm looking at some options for bags on the passenger seat. Garbage bags are not an option, but I have seen some bags with waterproof covers.

On F3 I wear a first gear riding outfit each day and I take a small waterproof bag on the back with base layer clothes plus jeans and a shirt. I have done trips up to 2200 miles so far with this configuration. I have some Nelson Riggs saddlebags that are easy on and off on the F3 but so far I really have not needed them.

Give these folks a look. I have one of their bags that sits on the passenger seat. There is a harness system that goes under the seat that allows me to fuel up with out removing the bag. It also has a built in rain cover that is attached to the bag in a zippered compartment on top.

I'm able to lean against it on long rides. I can also store a lot of gear inside. I wasn't willing to cut a hole in my seat for a backrest. I have the best of both worlds of extra storage and a back rest.

For many years and 100k miles, I use a Nelson Rigg (waterproof) sissy bar bag as a seat bag
(not a fan of luggage that needs a separate waterproof cover)
it easily stays put using only the vertical straps placed around the passenger grab rails
Makes a great backrest as well

One possibility you could explore would be to ups or fedex your items to the hotel for spyderfest and then plan on purchasing your saddlebags at spyderfest and bring the items home with you?

If if you do give that some thought, pm me I'm in western NY and you could ship your stuff here and I can throw it it my 622 trailer and bring it with me to spyderfest. I should have room.

Now you take Bob D. He throws his dirty underwear away after use to lighten the load. Don't worry about the environment. Bobs been known to throw as many as two pair away during a one month trip. Be ware of Bob. Packing is no big deal for him.

Seriously, shipping clothes home when it is soiled is a great idea and allows you more room and space. Or usually while traveling and at rally's you tend to accumulate things. Go to the nearest post office and ship it home.

I do road trips on my GS and F3 without using saddle bags. For the base, I use what I call a 'turtle shell.' It straps on to the grab handles and one strap further down for stability. It can hold a lot. In it, I keep my everyday necessities. Clothes, toiletries, etc.

On top of that, in a duffle bag, I keep riding gear. Gerbing, rain gear, chaps, etc. Stuff I can get to quick. I use ROK straps to keep the duffle bag on. Strap the duffle on between the grab bars and the seat and up over the top, each gas-up check the tension. Things shift. Use straps, not bungie cords. Bungie cords have a weak spot between the cord and the metal hook. Not good or healthy!

If I think it's going to rain, have a trash compactor bag to put the duffle bag in. It's been with me since 1999. Last trip, it got a hole in a corner, but I put that on the underside. Lots of good memories with that bag...

You dont need a lot most all motels have washer and dryers in them . A lot easier than trying to pack a lot.

In frunk, extra gloves, rain gear, riding stuff you need. In an ortleb dry bag, put clothes and kit. Carry dry bag in to hotel, like regular luggage. A couple of straps, hooks on, removes easy. You only need 5 days worth. Beyond that, do laundry!! We did 26 days to Alaska. No problem!

A good sissybar bag & finding a set of saddlebags would be great. Rivco had a deal this year on this bag I lock to passenger grips with cable lock & im good. Pack light & dont fret you can always mail stuff back home. (Works in a bind). Most important thing is the $$$$$ you will find Farkles & food you will dont wanna miss. Riding groups are helpfull too share the load, & escort cars that can carry more back for you & others in group. Enjoy
