I had an extra key made up when I bought the Spyder. It is something I do by habit with any vehicle I buy. My service key is either in the ignition or my jeans watch pocket. My ryding spare is on my house key chain and the third stays at home in a secure location also known to my wife. BTW, it is also a good idea to do the emergency hidden trunk release mod, lest you manage to lock up a garment containing the key. Belt and suspenders? Maybe, but it gives me one thing less to worry about.

For those of us newby's please expand about the hidden trunk release. Not sure I have seen that reference before. MMcc
Spyder #1 - 2008 GS SM5 Premier Edition #1977. RIP after 80,000 miles.
Spyder #2 - 2012 RT SM5. Traded in after 24,000 miles.
Spyder #3 - 2015 F3 SM6. Put 13,000 miles on and sold it.
Spyder #4 - 2017 F3 SM6. Too good of a deal to pass up!
.
If I were buying a new Spyder now, knowing this, I would have an extra key made so that there were three keys, then I could always have a backup at home in case of a bad situation. Or, if you only have one key, go get another made BEFORE you need it!
Inquiry: What should I expect the bill to be if I get an extra key cut for me by the dealer? This just seems like such a good idea; but forewarned is always the best way to be!

My Spyder rs is only 11 months old, I bought it 2nd hand, private sale so no dealer warranty, and over a 100 mile round trip to nearest dealer.
Both my keys occasionally come up with BAD KEY message, won't start. If I breath on it, and clean it, it works again, I carry both Keys now, as I don't trust it, not a good advert for Can-Am
saw it yesterday, rotated key several times and it finally cleared. I'm 700 miles from my dealer in the mountains of NC. Hoping it won't show up again. If it does I'll have to park it.

My 2015 F3 gave me the bad key error message about 6 weeks ago and after about 10 minutes re-set and got it started. No problems for next couple of weeks then it did it again when I went out to start it. It re-set and the dealer said BRP recomended re-flashing the system. No problems till about a week ago except this time would not re-set. BRP thinks it is the antenna and I hope it is..........but if not than I will have to wait for the module.
My nightmare about having only 1 key was fixed by me, I ordered to blanks from the US, then I had to worry about whoever would cut the key (as BRP doesn't do that) then have BRP program them. Which all went just fine, luckily. BUT now I had my first DESS error and I am completely worried and worked up about what this will mean for me. It is a nightmare, and I don't need anymore bad dreams.....lately has been the pits.

Me too, I am 3 hours of hard riding to get to a dealer, for me, it is not a trip I want to take again (did it for the first service) until I need my next service, as it is really hard on me overall, 2 hours or 3 I do ok, but 3 going and 3 coming back is hard and it is hard riding, going about 75 miles an hour the whole while, on a 2 lane highway with people who do not know how to drive, and they are nuts out there, sometimes in my lane coming at me, etc....it is a really tough drive, fun yes, but long and hard. I too am in mountains....in Mexico

Just remember Bob, most dealers are unaware that the key blanks changed in 2014. The earlier keys look the same but the chips are different and will not work on the 2014 or later models. I had two different dealers that tried to make a key for this and were "clueless". ( Coyote Motorsports and Ride Now Motorsports)
2013 blanks and prior will not work in the 2014 and later. They are different! Cannot be programed.

As a warning to you all, you can not get a replacement key programmed to match your bike, if you don't have a working key with you.
If you lose your key while you're out on the road, make sure you have an extra hidden somewhere on the vehicle that you can get to without needing a key, or you will have to buy a new ignition switch and a new DISS module to be able to start the bike and ride, and once again have two keys.
Don't ask how I know this, just know that the cost is over $300. Oh, I'll tell you anyway...
I only had one key, and when it got damaged and lost it's ability to communicate with the DISS, there is no way to program a new key. As unlikely as it seems, you can not get a replacement key if you don't have a working key.
I found this warning in the owner's manual....
"NOTE: Your should receive two keys with your vehicle. Each key contains a computer chip specifically pre-programmed to start your vehicle. Store the spare key in a safe place because you MUST have your spare key to have another one made....."
Don't ever leave home without both keys. One in the ignition and one taped, or tie-strapped to the bike somewhere. Not in the trunk or under the seat. You need a key to get there!
If I were buying a new Spyder now, knowing this, I would have an extra key made so that there were three keys, then I could always have a backup at home in case of a bad situation. Or, if you only have one key, go get another made BEFORE you need it!
The ignition switch and the DESS Module are under warranty I had my DESS MODULE (replaced twice under warranty) and my Ignition switch replaced ( once) and it was under warranty, they reprogramed the key the first time.
I have a "Thread going " KEY CODE AGAIN ON A 2014RTS-SE6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" ( some say is long like a novel-book) Deanna
