Wind on the person behind

My lady friend has enough 2-wheel "Second Rider" experience to know a good windshield from an ineffective one. While the stock windscreen on our 2014 RT-Limited makes things fairly quiet and non-turbulent for me (5'8"), her take is quite different. At interstate speeeds, the windshield has to be in the full up position or else her helmet is all over the place from turbulence (we both wear full-face helmets).

During rain she experiences drafts such that the interior of her helmet gets wet; something which has never happened on a lot of different motorcycles.

Otherwise, under normal conditions, she makes out OK, but not as overall quiet and non-turbulent as on, say, the V-Srom with a good aftermarket screen.

Part of it is I'm sure due to the "king/queen" sadddle configuration, which sits her somewhat higher relative to myself than most other motorcycle seats.

For those who ride two-up on a regular basis, any advice? Have your experiences been similar? Is the vent at the base of some windshields of any value in this particular regard?

My wife and I have quite a bit 'two up' experience, on cruisers, sport tourers, and full dressed Harleys, and both agree that our 2015 RT Limited gives us both much better weather protection than any other machine we've had. In fact, in a good rain, as long as we can maintain a decent speed we don't get wet, in fact, we don't even get damp. I've couldn't imagine not getting me feet or gloves wet. Sorry you and your mate are having such a problem. I will say, that with my wife aboard, I do keep the windshield in the full up position.

Take a look at F4 custom windshields they have several sizes that will help.

Pretty much the same for us.

Wife is 5'6" and she gets a bit of buffeting on the highway. Around town not so much.

Highway is windscreen full up. Around town it is full low.

In the rain, we get wet. Often, we will run the rain, windscreen full up and both tucked in like a sport bike, as low as we can get. Or we take out the rain gear and not worry about getting wet.

Couple of thoughts,

Pushing a large ,almost vertical shield through the air Will have a low pressure area behind it. The further away from the screen ( passinger) the strong turbulence will try to fill this low pressure. Either the screen must be really big----------------or a simple vent to make the still air bubble larger. I have the BRP vented shield. Fits perfect and no complaints from my wife about helmet shaking turbelence. We also stay dry in the rain above 25 mph or so.

If your handy, a Honda Goldwing vent can be had for about $50 . Something to consider before spending 7 times as much on a new screen. I also have a Honda Valkyire with an oversized shield and vent I installed. Works perfect

I agree. I have a 2014 RT LTD with the F4 custom vented tall wide windshield. It's fantastic. Rain becomes a non-issue as long as you can maintain a reasonable speed.

motoswami, are you sure her helmet isn't just too big??? It wasn't a new helmet to go with the Spyder was it??

If her helmet fits properly, it shouldn't be free to move around on her head at all, let alone be loose enough anywhere to let any drafts (or rain) in!! But if it's too big or too loose a fit/the wrong shape for her head, even by just a little, the airflow that hasta happen when you are out in the breeze like you are on one of these things regardless of how well the windscreen works, will catch the air more than it should, make the helmet move some, & as a result make it almost impossible for her to hold her head still as well as let the drafts & rain in around the edges!!

I'd be trying to see if a better suited &/or better fitting helmet fixes the problem before doing anything to the windscreen.

I rode my new F3 Spyder over to F4 Customs and met up with Don. He installed the 32in windshield and I couldn't be happier with the result. We use the windscreen in a similar manner...full up on the highway and full low around town. We avoid riding in the rain.

My RT has the F4 extra wide...same height as OEM. Plus I have the OEM adjustable wind deflectors. It works for us.

F4 windshields has one that is 3" wider on each side & and at the top.Pricey at $375-425 but well worth it if it makes rhe Lady happy!

I have the one that is 3" wider on each side. Works perfect because it also knocks the wind off my shoulders.

Thanks for the suggestion and nice illustration. At this fall's Spyders in the Smokies, your crew installed the two lower wings, as pictured.

The helmet does happen to be new, but she's pretty picky about how well her lids fit, and hates drafts up from underneath.
Maybe the next opportunity to ride in the rain, we'll dig out the previous helmet, which did not have any issues on a variety of different motorcycles in all sorts of weather. If her head stays dry in it, tghen we'll know the answer. Aerodynamics is peculiar stuff.
