    Default Wind Chill

    Hello all,

I was looking at the chart in the below link. Does it mean if it is 40 degrees out and you are going 70 degrees.....then the wind chill is 10 degrees?

That's pretty much correct. I've had that chart hanging on my garage wall for a couple of years and go by it when we ride in the winter. Some December, January and February mornings get down into the 30s, so we wear our face masks and scarves when we start out.

Partially correct. That formula is the old formula that is a bit aggressive. The currently accepted formula is a bit more complicated but the following link has a calculator. So, for your variables the old formula shows it to be about 10 F, whereas the new formula is 23.8 F. Still cold, and I personally experienced it this week!!

Yeah, but it would be a lot colder without your underwear!

On the Spyder the wind chill is probably somewhat less because of the wind protection from the windshield and air deflectors. Also, the apparent chill depends on sunshine also. 50° under clouds feels a whole cooler than 50° with bright sun shining. At least that's been my experience.

    Cool

    Never used such scientific methods!
I used to ride my Norton Atlas to work and when I got to work I took
my gloves off and if I could break bits off from my frozen beard it was
cold! How cold it was at that point in time was entirely academic.....I had
to ride to work there was no choice!

Really; who cares if the wind-chill is 10 degrees, or only 5 degrees?
Everybody reacts differently to the temperature, and there are no rules of thumb for what is considered to be comfortable.
Just dress appropriately, and enjoy the ride!

Wind chill will put the bite on you if you have skin exposed. The face mask is a good idea. A balaclava is good under the helmet and for the neck.

I rode in 10 below zero (no windshield) for starters back in MN in 1966. Now that was what I considered cold. No specialized gear for riding in those days either.
