    Default The Lamonster Project

It has begun. I loaded up the trailer the night before and headed to Real McCoys shop the next morning. James is a good friend of mine and I asked him about painting my Spyder. He said sure, he's thinking about getting one and he would like to get a hands on feel for the workings of it. We're going to check the valves while we're at it. I guess his Snap-on guy has one and he loves it.

The drive over the mountain was pretty wet and it was dark when I came over the pass. I'm about 120 miles from his shop in Inman SC. When I got there I couldn't believe how wasted my Spyder got in the open trailer. If I would have known that I would have taken my enclosed trailer.

So the first thing I had to do is wash the thing in his wash bay. From there we went over the paint schemes I had in mind. I showed him a few pictures of some of the things I liked that had been done on a Spyder. We both agreed that a blacked out front end will look great. We racked over some ideas and I made some changes on some of the ideas I had. I think we have a plan now.

So while James was taking care of another guy I started ripping things apart. I think James may have been a little freaked out when He saw how many wires and little parts there were to deal with. He said he's going to put all the painted parts on a sheet and let me have at it.

This is what it looked like when I left. I still have to go back and pull a few more parts for him. I'm going to try and help him as much as I can because this is a huge project. I think we counted close to 40 parts that are getting painted.

James thinks two weeks but I'm thinking three weeks. As long as it's done before Bikeweek.

I rode my bike home and then tore it apart and started painting some of the plastics and adding a the "spyder" to front trunk lid .

I knew you couldn't leave well enough alone. Tearing your ride down to the frame before a big event is getting to be tradition for you.

Your Spyder looks pretty bad, should be easier to pull parts for the valve adjustment though.

If the paint doesn't come out the way you like it I have a plan. You give the painted parts to me and try again with my stuff!

It's a good thing you know a guy as smart as me....

Got to spend some time working on the Spyder with James today.

Got just about all the painted panels sanded and ready for paint.

Got the rear wheel pulled and all the edges sanded down to bare metal and the rest of the wheel and sprocket will be painted black to match the new front wheels. That should make it pop.

I pulled the pegs and the peg mounts will be painted black.

Pulled the top handle bar cover and the No Magic risers and those will be powder coated black.

I got to tell you pulling that top cover was no joy. After doing several No Magic riser installs and seeing what it takes to do a BRP riser or any other riser install I can tell you for a fact that the No Magic install is a walk in the park compared to any others. Getting to those 6 little bolts were a pain and removing the ignition was not much fun either if you've never done one before.

I'm going to install new brakes while I'm at it seeing I have 25K on the Spyder now and most of that was towing a trailer. I was really surprised how much pad I still had left.

Got a few pics from James at Real McCoys. They haven't been wet sanded or cleared but they still look pretty good.

That looks good. I see you are still staying with the yellow.

You know, I would love to do something with mine. I actually still have the second set of panels in a box in the "junk" room that I bought specifically for painting.

But... what I've found in riding with the small group that I ride with... is that I'm collecting a nice assortment of rock chips on the front hood and fenders.

I'm the "tail gunner" by choice now after almost getting hit in the rear a couple of years ago during a fast stop. I think I'll stay there and safely collect a few more chips.

I like the pinstripes! Being a (multiple) BMW owner, a member of the BMWMOA, and my wife and I both in a BMW club, when she got her Spyder I kidded her that we could pinstripe it and add BMW emblems, and nobody would be the wiser. She vetoed the idea, of course, but it is nice to know that the pinstripes I saw in my minds eye look every bit as good in real life.
