    Default Helmet Storage Question

This may have already been asked, but I haven't been able to find anything.

Is it safe to store your helmet in the Spyders frunk when air temperatures are in the 115-120 Fahrenheit range or will the high temperatures weaken the helmet's structure over time?

It's very convenient to just put the helmet in the frunk after a ride, but my Spyder sits parked outside in the hot AZ sun and frunk temps likely reach far higher than the outside air. I recently bought a new helmet and have been bringing it inside when the Spyder is parked due to fears of heat damage. Is this really necessary? Any thoughts from those with more knowledge than me?

Helmet mfgs will probably tell you that inside home storage is best. Extreme temp fluctuations are rarely good for anything. I was shocked to hear at my first riders course that helmets should be replaced every 3-5 yrs. This is due to the protecting foam breaking down. So. Logic would have it that extreme temperatures would accelerate the process.

I am not an expert, just my opinion.

I leave mine on the seat when I go into a restaurant or store or whatever, or when parked in my garage. If I'm going to park it overnight in a hotel parking lot or someone's driveway, I bring it inside with me. I've been doing that for 37 years of riding and I don't think my helmets have been degraded because of the sun. But then I've never tested one of them either.

I'd say, since you park your outside in the hot sun, I would bring the helmet into the house just to be sure. JMHO

Good question. I will bet there is a techy or two on board that can give some "official" information.

My initial reaction would be to not leave the helmet baking aboard the .

One comment and one question -

The interior foam will degrade more quickly in the heat.

Why would you want to put on a helmet sitting in 110+ heat?

I carry mine with me in FL summer weather, no point in putting on a hot helmet.

[emoji1] I try not to put on a 110+ degree helmet, although it has happened a couple times. I ride early in the morning in the summertime when it's much cooler in the desert, but then the Spyder gets parked and sits outside baking throughout the rest of the day in the higher heat until the next morning when the temps have fallen. I plan to have a garage completed for the Spyder before next summer, but just wondered about what damage temperature extremes might be doing to our helmets in general since the RT makes it easy to store helmets onboard. Like I said in the original post, I've been bringing my new Shoei Neotech inside all the time.

You might want to bring it inside overnight just to let the sweat dry out. Your garage probably won't be much cooler than the trunk of the Spyder, I know my garage is really hot, even at night in the summer.

For me, the AZ heat and low humidity seems to dry out the helmet within a few minutes of taking it off my head. ( but it's a DRY heat ). You are correct about the heat of the garage though. No plans to leave my helmet out there. We are planning to insulate the garage, but that will only help a bit.

The main reason for the garage is that I just hate leaving my Spyder exposed to the brutal sun, not to mention all the beasties that populate the desert. [emoji6] While riding the other day, a large wolf spider came crawling over the dash toward me. That will definitely get the adrenalin going.[emoji15]

When I'm at home my helmet's in the air conditioning with me. If it's a short stop somewhere I'll put it in the frunk. If I'm going to be away for awhile and it's really hot I bring it with me.

at home, it's in my (mostly) climate controlled attached garage
sometimes in a helmet bag and sometimes just sitting on a table

when on a ride, I stick it over and hand it from the throttle grip unless I don't feel safe about it and in the funk it goes. my wife is riding with me more and more, so I think I'm going to purchase a couple of those grip end helmet locks for when I feel the need.

if it's really hot in the summer (I live in Nawlins'), I bring it and my jacket with me into a restaurant avoiding having to put it on with it really really hot from baking in the sun.

as far as replacing helmets, at 5 years, I start examining mine more closely and saving up for the next one. my wife has worn her's very little, so I'm stretching it's use by us longer compared to mine which was used for 25k miles a year for 3 years when I was healthy and energetic. I kept that one 3 years and then replaced it.
let's ride safe & be careful out there,

Default I wouldn't store it in bike long term

Back a few years, I took a MSF Advanced Rider course. (A MSF class was required for M endorsement on license at a military base overseas.) They were quite adamant about not leaving your helmet sitting on the bike and instead putting it on the ground. Their claim was that helmets were only good for one drop and would send you home for "an unsafe helmet" yours dropped. They were so into this that when I left mine on the bike to go take a bathroom break, I came out to find it sitting on the ground next to my front wheel, flat side down. They were quite self-righteous about it but I was really pissed. I told them that 1) they should NEVER mess with another bikers gear and 2) they had obviously never spent much time in the US southwest! I said I was willing to take the safety risk of a dropped helmet over the possible loss of control when I discovered something had crawled into my helmet! Fire ants are attracted to sweat!

After that long saga... I always store mine inside when the bike will be sitting for long. I figure less chance for unwanted guests taking up residence. I don't even keep them in the garage after finding an expensive Arai chewed up inside from mice after sitting on a shelf in the garage all winter. On a ride and doing a daytime stop, sure I'll lock it on the Spyder or in the right side case if I have room.
