Warming Up

I typically wait until I see a bar on the temp gauge before I start out on a ride. My F3 takes forever. I roll it out of the garage and crank it then go back in and start casually getting my gear on for the ride and when I go out the gauge is still empty. Is that true for everyone? Do you wait or just head out at low revs?

I generally just start it up, let it run for maybe 10-20 seconds to circulate the oil, then head out and ride it like I normally do.

I start my spyder ... then get my gear on... helmet, jacket, gloves... then take it easy for the first few minutes of riding...

I wait for the RPMs to drop below 1,000 before taking off. Then I ride it easy for the first mile or two until I get four bars on the temp gauge.

IMO, if it were necessary for Spyder engines to have a warm up period before the rider launches off BRP would put the requirement in the operator's guides.

It is so hot here that my temp gauge is usually just below the mid point when I first turn it on. No warm ups for me, I get on it and go, and go and go.

my f3 runs four bars whether it's 40 degrees or 90 degrees. i think brp has it set there.

I'm with you. I think I'll start heading out once I get my gear on and quit waiting on the bar. It usually comes on after about a half mile anyway.

Never done the warm up thing on . Mine are kept in a heated garage though.

As I am going through the boot up procedure, the helmet and gloves go on. Once I give it a start, I do wait the 30 seconds or so that it takes for the tachometer to drop to operating speed. It makes less of an initial clunk that way.

My back up is about 40 feet or so out my driveway and then about 2.5 blocks down my quiet country road in first gear (less than 30 mph). By the time I hit the stop sign, I then drive the Spyder normally.

For me, it takes about 2 to 3 miles for the engine to warm up to operating range. About 4 bars. On really cold days--I will have one or two bars for a while.

Only a short warm up. Usually just untill the idle drops to normal. Its 2miles out the 2lane hyw where I accel harder ( butthat 2 miles is all up hill ).

I noticed that also! Maybe when it gets down to the thirties it will drop a bar to three?

I gear up while the stoopid computer boots up. (our cars don't do that). WHen Spyder runs I ride.
No crazy acceleration or red line runs until fully warmed.

ALSO... you are getting ZERO MPG sitting in the driveway. Which is something that doesn't really
bother me, but you would be surprised what a "hot topic" mileage is here on SL.

much more than warm I just like to get the oil pumping and get going. Where I live I have to go a good 6 blocks before a main road so just putter down then get going...

I noticed there wasn't that awful clunking sound when putting it in gear if I wait.

My wife does the same thing and IMHO it's hard as hell on the drivetrain.
No need to let it warm up but at least give it 15-20 seconds to get everything circulating.

I usually start up just before pulling the helmet over my head and take it easy on it going out of the neighborhood.

Also, remember back in the 2-stroke days? You'd stick a piston without warmup and flogging it cold...lol.

I DO remember that!
I had a race-built engine in my 1992 Polaris XCR 440 (turned into a 520).
It needed to be up to full operating temperatures before you dared to grab any throttle...

Well I shot out a little earlier today. I didn't wait for the bar but still gave it a good minute. Old habits die hard.

I messed up my Yamaha 80cc one lunger that way. No one told me, was my first bike, and since it was a year old when purchased, the dealer could not find the owners manual. No, they would not fix it on their dime.
