    Default SE-5 SHIFTING PROBLEMS

HAS ANYONE ENCOUNTERED PROBLEMS WITH THE SE-5 TRANSMISSION? MY PROBLEM STARTED WITH THE DISPLAY SHOWING A BLINKING 5,4....5,4....5,4 ETC WHEN IN 5TH GEAR. IT WAS INTERMITTENT, BUT PROGRESSIVELY WORSENED TO THE POINT OF ALL GEAR NUMBERS BEING ERRATICALLY DISPLAYED, INCLUDING NEUTRAL AND REVERSE!! IT PROGRESSED TO A MECHANICAL PROBLEM OF NOT WANTING TO SHIFT OUT OF 1ST GEAR FROM A STOP AND TAKE OFF. THE FINALE WAS A STALL IN TRAFFIC AND ALTHOUGH I COULD RE-START, THE ENGINE WOULD STALL AS IF IT WERE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE AFTER TRAVELING 5-10 FEET. FORTUNATELY, WHEN I TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE SHIFTING PROBLEM CLEARED UP AND I MADE IT HOME.

Gear position sensor maybe? I don't own an SE5 but that sounds like what some SE5 owners described when they had shifting problems.

The problem has been seen before and there are several threads about it.
It's most likely the gear position sensor failing, though there are other causes.

Hopefully your dealer will be able to sort it out.

There is a service bulliten for this very problem. Take it to the dealer and let them replace the sensors and update the software.

My SE is a 2009 and has had nothing but shifting problems. Usually it sticks in first after a stop at a red light. But it has also locked in second, fifth, fourth, neutral, and reverse. I'm new on this board, but have posted some comments on another Spyder site and it seems like a few others have had the same issues. It has been at the dealer twice (it now has 1,800 miles on it) and they can't seem to find the problem. I've ridden motorcycles all my life, and I don't think the problem is with my driving technique. It is at the dealer now, and I really don't want it back until they can solve the problem as it is totally useless to ride.

I have searched the posts on this site and have found that some SE-5 owners have had similar issues, and they have been solved by replacing the gear position sensor and some kind of spring. I'll pass this info on to my dealer.

    Thanks, everyone.

I too experienced similar problems to everybodyu with my 08 SE5 stalling or lurching forward at stops. I took it into my dealer back in October and was told that after conversations with BRP that BRP was aware of teh transmission probloems and were working on a solution. They (BRP) also sent my dealer new Clutch Rollers that were installed and seemed to corrcet the problem.

Once I get the bike back on the road in the spring ng I will also pursue the software fix and gear position sensor fix as well.

The stalling and lurching is a problem with the clutch rollers...usually. False gear indications, stuck in gear, and quitting running altogether, along with some other odd problems sometimes, are a result of the gear sensor and the subject of the service bulletin. If you have no further issues, why press the dealer to fix them?

Default My SE5 has problems shifting too

I have a 2008 SE5 that has had on-going gear shifting problems. The bike will lock into a gear and not respond. I have had to stop, turn it off, let it set for about 10-15 minutes before there is any hope of getting it out of the gear it is stuck in.

It has been at the dealer now for 3 weeks. They called BRP and was first told to replace the shifter switch. They did, and no help. BRP has now sent the dealer two PCM modules that both test bad when installed in my bike. BRP has now told the dealer to replace the sensor in the transmission.

I'll print off this thread and call the dealer tomorrow. If there is a service bulletin on the shifting problems, how come BRP didn't inform the dealer about it? Just wondering.

BRP's bulletins are announced and distributed on Bossweb, on the dealer's computer. Real easy to miss one if it is printed in the weekly update. Others are issued separately by the same route. Some dealers don't check this religiously, apparently. Not sure if the is some kind of index or search function for them.

Default Problems shifting out of reverse

The only problem that I have had is shifting out of reverse. at times it will shift into Nutral just fine ...like at the dealership when I go to have it checked. at others I hit the shifter to make the shift and all I get is an "E" on the gear position indicater and the R and the N blink alternately then the message " Check the transmission scrolls across the display as well as the "Check Engine" idiot light comming on. Sometimes just shutting down and restarting will cause it to shift into nutral at others I have to tinke with the shifter to get it to go.

The night that I brough my Spyder home I had a serious problem with it sticking in reverse. I found in the owners manual where you can manually shift the transmission. Just a shift from Reverse to nutral fixed the problem that night.

    Later.

My spyder is at the dealer getting the SE5 update. It started to freeze in 1st when decelerating. Will know if it works when i get it back. There is a service bulletin on this. Just notify the dealer and they should address it under warranty.

Just wondering if the SE 5 reported issues fall within a specific serial number range ..like the last 3-4 numbers in the VIN ??
If so do we have an idea from the dealers, BRP etc. on this site what that range might be ?

Simple solution, buy the manual...I don't think BRP has the auto figured out yet and the headache might not be worth it.

I read of many problems with the SE5...far more than with the SM5...sure, there are those who have no problems at all, but the frequency of issues appears to be much higher...there are those that will say that we just hear about the problems more on this board, but if all things are equal, we'd hear more about the SM5s as there are likely more of them on the road.

IMHO, get a SM5...more fun anyway with the clutch!

If there is a warranty issue addressed in a service bulletin, that bulletin should list the machines affected. The numbers are listed by model, with serial number ranges beneath each model. The model designation of your Spyder is shown on the VIN plate on the swing arm, and on your warranty registration, and probably nowhere else. There are many models. Go figure?

Unfortunately, the service bulletins are not published by BRP, although some have shown up on line or in service manual discs. Have your dealer pull the paper copy of the bulletin, and look up the serial number by model. Even then, these are not blanket recalls. Your Spyder must exhibit the symptoms of the problem, often including the proper diagnostics, before it will be addressed.

Should be Gear Position Sensor, Spring and software upgrade. I would have them do all of it at once.

it is better they do the bulletin complete from a-z the spring increases oil pressure to aid shifting and the gbps sensor reads more acurately and reduces electrical issues, the program also helps

Had the TSB upgrade last week on my SE5 and the bike runs excellent now. Covered under warranty. BRP should have recalled the units but at least they fix works when requested.
