Failure "rates" are only known to BRP.
2015's have a lower failure rate.
2016s to early to tell but guessing it will be extremely low or ZERO

While the model year was not stated, the dealer here in Tulsa indicated they'd replaced 4-DESS modules over the last month or so. That would make mine from yesterday #5 & know I'm not at all happy. I bought this bike not just to ride to work, but for weekend trips for myself & the wife. Now I'm stuck with something that I'm scared to take out of town for fear that I'll be left at the side of the road in some out of the way place with a non-starting bike.

The new Crypto-Chips cannot be cloned.
    Funny you should mention that...

While I was waiting for service to move the F3 demo pegs to #5 for my test ride, I was entertained watching the Spyder specialist and my sales guy (very knowledgable.... rides a Spyder), trying to create a third key for a 2016 RT using the shop manual.......
You put the old key in,
you pull the old key out,
you put the old key in,
and you shake it all about,
you do the hokey pokey and you turn around......and then you start again

It was unbelievably convoluted with waiting 5 seconds after pressing the mode and some other button, and then half inserting the old key and then.... you get the picture. I actually went and got a coffee and brought a couple back for them. They eventually got it after around 30 minutes of trying . The associating swearing and thunderous looks directed to the RT, the Shop manual, and each other were well and truly worth the cost of the coffee.

Are you serious? If so, it sounds like they were trying to program a 2016 using the procedure for 2013 and earlier. With 2014 and on you put the key in, turn it on, and program the ECM with BUDS to love the new key!

Yep.....serious......They must have had twenty attempts while I was watching......I couldn't see exactly what year Shop manual they were using. It did eventually work which was fortunate for the guy waiting to leave on his new RT. He was heading to Darwin from Newcastle which is around 4/5000 kms.

He did say that sometimes it works first go, and sometimes it takes 20 goes. He did NOT dismiss the possibility that it could have been their interpretation/execution of the instructions that was causing the problems, but it is obviously a fickle process.

Not fickle at all, unless Aussie machines are different from North American machines in the way keys are programmed in. Did they have a laptop plugged into the Spyder? It makes me wonder if they actually got the new third key programmed in, or just think they did.

Well so it goes again. The Bad Key Syndrome. BRP won't open a case unless there is absolutely undeniable positive proof that it is an issue with the bike. Well, we posted video of it and sent it to our dealer. This is the second time with this issue and yet they haven't opened a case. Frikken trade in ain't worth losin that much money. 2015 F3s with just over 2600 miles. Sun-uff-beeatch. Wife's been stranded 2 x's now...while we waited on tow company to come get her bike, we figgered aww hell, try it one more time...Lo and behold it fired up. Dammit we got the hell outta dodge fast and went straight to the dealer/service. Now we gotta wait and see if BRP decides to open a case.

Sorry Idaho, I missed that post.......no they didn't have a PC plugged in, and the rider used the new key to start the bike, so it obviously worked OK.

We didn't do anything.... after waiting about 30-45 minutes for the tow company, we just turned the key and it started. Since it was actually running, we just rode it the 90 miles to the dealer.....

Hi, Same DESS problem happened twice after a few minutes it started now I am concerned that I will be stuck some place. I have 2014 SE6 Lmtd. 4000 miles. At first, I thought it was a fluke, but now I know this is a major problem that should be addressed.

I'm not Deanna, however if you have the same Module that came with your Spyder, it's not the newest version (# 710004916 ).... BRP isn't sure why or how the Module is going BAD, just that it is.... It's not going to get better, it will FAIL completely...... MAKE your dealer re-place it .... the info is logged in the computer & B.U.D.S. can retrieve it...... If they tell different - THEY ARE EITHER LIEING OR STUPID....... nothing in the computer dis-appears NOT EVER, not even if you hit DELETE ....... GOOD LUCK ......Mike ..............PS keep us posted

Unfortunately, there are THREE possible causes of the problem and all must be replaced in order to ensure no future errors since BRP nor the dealer can isolate the EXACT cause of the problem.

The error is caused by either the DESS module, the antenna in the ignition switch, a bad transponder chip in the key, or a combination of the aforementioned.

Since a NEW key comes with a new ignition switch, 2 of the potential problems are addressed by replacement of the ignition switch.

So BOTH the ignition switch and the DESS module require replacement.

Owners MUST BE PROACTIVE and INSIST that BRP replaces both the DESS module with 710004916 as you stated AND the ignition switch with part number 710004413.
These can be seen by the dealer via the TSBs in the BOSS Web.

Any other "fix" is playing Russian Roulette.

    AJ

    BTW
You are correct in that once REGISTERED an error does not clear from the computer.
However, this DESS error does not always register in the computer. WHY???? Another mystery, but having been with the tech when going thru the stored errors codes it was personally observed that NOTHING indicating DESS was present. That is why I suggest a photo. Again, the key word in dealing with this error is PROACTIVE!

Next week ( 8/28/16) Sunday it will be a year, since I have had the DESS MODULE( part # 710004190) & the switch replaced( part # 710004413) and I have not had the D.E.S.S. key code show up.

I know that the current D.E.S.S. Module part # is 710004916.

Also, if the D.E.S.S. key code shows up, I will post on this thread and let everyone know. Till then I am going . Deanna

Well, I have had my spyder on the road for 3 months since I had my module replaced, and all is well so far.
But on another note, just 2 weeks ago my daughter (who is home from college) was about to head out on her 2002 nissan maxima. This is a car that I bought new for my wife, and passed it down to my daughter when she got her license. Well it would not start. Starter turned, but nothing. After $989, found out the security module in the ignition had gone bad. Had to have it replaced, and all 3 keys reprogrammed. I found out that this is not an uncommon problem for cars also.

Just gotta wonder how long the service will keep the bike, and where the part is coming from. Service guy goes on vacation for a week after 8-27-16. Hopefully part comes from local and not Ca-nuh-duh...lol

    Parts come from Quebec.
Depending on your location - up to 2 weeks.
Once parts received, one day should do it.

When I had mine, I continued to ride "local" until parts were received before bringing it in.

AJ, I called my dealership on a Tuesday, the part came in on following Thursday, appointment was next day, (Friday). It took my dealership about "1 hour" to do the work.

Put both keys in their holders ( plastic) and walked away about 50 to 60 feet, and waited for about 1/2 hour ( in my mine I was thinking of calling Roadside Assistance, if the spyder did not start the 2nd time, I did not have to call Roadside Assistance,) because it started. Then I went on my way.

    Thank god!

So tomorrow I will call my dealer and tell them I got the D.E.S.S KEY CODE again. I had the D.E.S.S. Module replaced last month ( 7/17/15) and both keys reprogramed. I will post here when I can on what the dealer says. My spyder is a 2014RTS-SE6. I know this happens a lot.

I did start a " Thread last month on the above subject. I was wandering if anyone else has had this recurring problem?

I do not know if this is correct or not, but I was told that if two chipped keys for different products, such as my Toyota and my Spyder are stored together, it can cause them to mess up the coding on each other. I was told that this information came from an auto manufacturer. I was not told which one. Just a thought.
