My dealer wants $1050 to fix my Dess problem. Want to replace module and ignition. It's at the dealership now. A 2017 F3 Limited with 12000 miles. Does anybody think BRP will step up and help with this bill. Any advice would be great.

From what I've learned over the past 7 years about the DESS issue. 85% of the failures were fixed by ONLY changing the DESS module NOT the ignition. The part is approx. $135.00, and is plug and play ..... If you can get the frunk off it's an easy fix. I have Pics in an album on my Bio page ..... Mike

Don’t know for sure on your year. But on my 2010 when I replaced the DESS MODULE. That was all I replace. The maintenance manual is miss leading. The DESS with a new one goes in to programming mode for keys when first turn on. I think on the new bike the ECU stores the key codes and you need the software to do programming for the new keys and maybe for old keys with the new DESS.

This is what I know about access - I don't mean to be a know it all but here is my thinking about this:

I do security card access for a living. (16 YEARS) I do know on some sites that if you have the card in your wallet and you have credit cards with the chips in there with them, you will get a bad read on the card reader not turning green to allow access. The chip in the key is like a chip in credit cards that emits a mild radio frequency when presented to the reader (YOUR BIKE) if there is a frequency that is close or more powerful thsn the key (GPS, another chipped key, phone, Bluetooth, a car fob, or a watch connected to Bluetooth) you may get a bad read.

IdahoMTspyder proved the frequency theory by starting a bike with a blank key. If you were to put the key and a let's say a Honda fob next to the non-chipped key, you should see the key is bad on the screen.
    tntnj,
    I have a 2014 RTS-SE 6 Spyder, I had the D.E.S.S module replaced twice (1st time on July 14, 2015; 2nd time Aug. 28th, 2015) and the switch replaced once (part # 710004413, on Aug. 28th, 2015).

The following is from the dealership Summary: This TST explains the reason a customer may experience, intermittently, a D.E.S.S error message in the cluster. Type. General
TST Detail: Refer to TST Roadster 2nd Generation D.E.S.S Principal of Operation (2014 and UP) to fully understand the principle of the latest D.E.S.S. generation.

Problem: Intermittently, ignition key not being recognized causing the unit not to start. The D.E.S.S. ERROR message will be displayed in the Cluster.

Solution: Replace the D.E.S.S. module. Program the keys using B.U.D.S referring to 2014 RT Shop manual section Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.).

Note if after the replacement of the D.E.S.S. module, the problem reoccurs, update the previously opened BOSSWEB case or open up a BOSS WEB case and report the situation.

Technical Explanation: When the D.E.S.S module sends its signal to the antenna to read the key chip, the radio frequency produced by the antenna is too strong and the key chip is saturated. The saturation changes the data transmitted back to the D.E.S.S module causing a bad lecture of the key chip.

    Warranty: Claim under regular warranty.

BRP has had cases where a cell phone or a magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch, has caused this. This includes any device that might emit some type of frequency. That was from a BRP tech.

I carry my cell phone in my trunk (in the rear). I carry my other (2nd) Spyder key on me, or in a jacket, which is away from the ignition.

Another solution is "turn on/off immediately in 4 to 5 cycles" - DO NOT LET THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN when you do this.

The 2nd time I got the D.E.S.S error (Aug. 28th, 2015) the dealership replaced the D.E.S.S module (part #710004190) and the Switch (part #710004413) at the time my Spyder had 8,740 miles on it.

    Hope this helps!

I also posted the above info on this thread, maybe back near the beginning. I am trying to help.

Since Aug 28th, 2015 and the 2nd module, I have not had the D.E.S.S. error.

    Bucketman,

Did you get an extended warranty when you bought the bike?

If so have your dealership OPEN UP A CASE with BRP.

I had my D.E.S.S module replaced twice. (The first time in July 14, 2015, 2nd time in Aug. 28th, 2015) both times it was covered under warranty.

I just changed the DESS module this weekend, on my 2014 RT SE6.
It gave me exactly two warnings before it totally refused to start (fortunately, in my garage).
Here's to hoping the new module goes ~48,000 miles and 7 years like that first one did....

You sure it was the module? I replaced the module twice and decided to go with the antenna this time.

    Madison Sully,

What is the part number of the DESS module you changed this weekend?

I hope you get a lot of miles on your new DESS module.

Before I replaced the DESS module, both of my keys had DESS ERRORs multiple times over several days. Keys kept, well, in the house while the Spyder sits in the garage.
Anyway, after DESS module replacement, no issues on probably ~10-12 starts. So yeah, pretty sure it was the DESS module.

    Thanks.
Seems your Spyder either came with or possibly already had a warranty replacement to DESS 71000490.
The 710004190 is a second generation DESS, and not the original part number installed in the 2014. Maybe yours was a later build if the DESS module is original.

I believe we have read here that others too have had failures of the DESS module 710004190, but not as frequent as the first generation modules.

The part number 710004916 is the latest generation DESS module and has an excellent history of no failures that I have heard of.

Seeing another failure of the 710004190 would have me speculate that owners with that DESS module might consider upgrading to the latest generation module or carrying one as a spare to lessen disappointment if traveling and avoid towing fees or shop fees, even availability concerns if and when truly needed.
A second option would be to disable the DESS system via BUDS.

Was the cost of the 710004916 still approximately $125?
