I don't think that is possible as the electronics in each key are not powered up until they are in the vicinity of the ignition and receive an electrical signal from the antenna. However, if a second key is next to the first key when the ignition is turned on both keys MAY get activated and the digital signals from each get mixed up and cause an error. You can do with your Can Am keys and get a DESS error most every time. I have gotten the DESS error by having a Nissan key next to the Spyder key when I turned it on, but not every time.

    Negative.

The key MUST be in the ignition switch in order to be activated. IF the/a key is merely in the vicinity (even on your rocker switches) it will not activate and if it were to activate, BRP has much bigger problems then a DESS module.

Are you suggesting the DESS errors I saw during my experimentation were a figment of my imagination?

Try it. Put Spyder key #1 into the ignition.
Hold Spyder key #2 next to key #1.
    Turn ignition on.

I'll bet you get the same DESS error I saw!

You mean a couple of photos like these? The first shows the key error when the second key was next to the first key when ignition was turned on. The second photo shows the bike running with a non-chip key in the ignition and the chip key next to it.

Technical Explanation" When the D.E.S.S. module sends its signal to the antenna to read the key chip, the radio frequency produced by the antenna is too strong and the key chip is saturated. The saturated changes the data transmitted back to the D.E.S.S. module causing a bad lecture of the key chip".

Hi Deanna.....forgive my ignorance, but what initiates the DESS module sending its signal to the antenna? Is is simply the key being close proximity, or does the key have to be inserted?

When you insert the key and turn on the ignition, the DESS module activates the chip in the key via the coil near the ignition lock cylinder.

Joyce47, I posted ( on page 6 post # 126 title " new DESS module + Ignition switch fixed update 8/28/15" ) on what happened when I had my New dess module + Ignition switch replaced.

My dealership " replaced the rear trunk key lock". Also, get from your dealership a new trailer lock.

Keep us updated on what happens. Deanna

Pete, When I am on the road, I have my cell phone, camera and other items in my trunk, and my spyder starts.

Also, I have the dess module part # 710004190 ( was installed on Aug. 28th 2015) and I know my dess module part # is not the latest.

The current/latest dess module part # is 710004916.

You are welcome for the info. Deanna

I don't know how many times I must say the same thing before this sinks into everybody's mind.

The ONLY way to be reasonably sure the error gets fixed is:

    Have the DESS Module replaced

    AND

    Have the Ignition Switch replaced.

Be proactive and TELL your Dealership these are the parts that need to be replaced and give them the Part Numbers!

DO NOT accept any other solution!

    OR

    Disable the system entirely!

I'm not going to post the part numbers again. I've done it and so has Deanna multiple times.

Believe, don't believe me, that's your choice.

If you have the latest and greatest module and it is still acting up then it sounds like they don't have the problem solved. That sucks.

AJ, yes, I have posted the Part numbers several times for the D.E.S.S. module, and the IGNITION switch( part # is 710004413).

I posted the part number for the D.E.S.S. module/ and the ignition switch

when I had the D.E.S.S. module and the ignition switch replaced the 2nd time, in Aug 28th, 2015.
