DESS Key code again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today, I was doing some errands - after I left the store went to start my Spyder & I got the D.E.S.S KEY CODE "AGAIN" I put a key into the ignition, got the above error, put the 2nd key into the ignition, got the same message, (and of course I didn't have my camera so, sorry, but no picture) & the Spyder did not start.

Put both keys in their holders (plastic) and walked away about 50 to 60 feet, and waited for about 1/2 hour (in my mind I was thinking of calling Roadside Assistance if the Spyder did not start the 2nd time) I did not have to call Roadside Assistance because it started. Then I went on my way.

Thank god!

So tomorrow I will call my dealer and tell them I got the D.E.S.S KEY CODE again. I had the D.E.S.S. Module replaced last month (7/17/15) and both keys reprogramed. I will post here when I can on what the dealer says. My Spyder is a 2014 RTS-SE6. I know this happens a lot.

I did start a Thread last month on the above subject. I was wandering if anyone else has had this recurring problem?

I'm not sure they have a good handle on this problem. You are not the first to have it more than once after the change of parts. The replacement parts may be defective as well. This new system seems a bit flawed even if it is safer as far as ignitions go. They are all being done as they fail... of a way to find the defective parts. They should replace them all with new ones and send those back to the manufacturer... jmo

I have a 2014, RT, LTD with 7000 miles. DESS error message is a reoccurring problem, bike won't start. Very intermittent. Very annoying. Bike is now at the dealer in Brainerd, MN for service. They have ordered parts but I don't believe that either the dealer or CanAm has any idea of what is going on.

I've been told by a member in here who's opinion I value; that BRP has a problem getting decent-quality parts from their outside vendors...

Having spent 30 yrs overseeing the implementation of QC programs, that is rarely the vendor's fault. But, sometimes it is.

It is usually the failure of the buyer's QC proogram, the specs for the parts, incoming inspections, etc, etc.

Seems like quite a few DESS issues on the 14+ models popping up. Nothing worse than electrical gremlins to ruin your confidence in your ride.....

I sent an email to my can-am dealer, and asked them to make a note of this on their paper work that they have.

My can-am dealer has opened a case with BRP about the D.E.S.S issue that I am having, I am waiting to hear back from my can-am dealership on what BRP what to do next. Deanna

Try the foil and document the results.

Next I would try clearing the system by removing the battery negative lead from the battery post so the battery is isolated, then touch the negative lead to the positive.

My thoughts, no guarantees.

Wanted to add, for us, I always let the key be installed and set for a minute before I power up. Also, and don't tell anyone, inside the garage I leave the key in the ignition most times.

I know don't tell, but they would need to move a bunch of crap to get the machine out.

PK, I put the key into the ignition, then I get my helmet ( in the frunk) then I go thru the procedure on the starting the spyder, and then I power up.

Also, I want to tell any one that you have a lot of crap in front of your machine . Deanna

I have an appointment for this Friday, I hope by replacing the D.E.S.S module and the ignition Switch solves the problem. BRP needs to fix this problem/ and get a grip on it. Deanna

Not to be a pessimist but I think BRP is grasping at straws here. They don't know what to do so they replace everything. In my mind, the ignition switch just holds the key. The communication is between the key and the DESS module. The switch has nothing to do with it. I sincerely hope there is more to it that I don't understand. Wouldn't be the first time.

Is your unit consistently showing the error? According to the shop manual, there is no way to actually test the DESS module. The manual says to replace the module and if the problem goes away, then it was the module. If it does not go away, then it wasn't the module. But if your problem is intermittent, you won't know for sure if it's fixed or not. That would be the case here even if you replace both components. If your error always occurs, then the good news is you will know if it's fixed or not.

I appreciate your updates on this problem. I know you'll keep us posted on the results after the work is done Friday. Thanks.

Call your dealership and take the picture with you to your dealership. Make an appointment with your can-am dealer.

If it happens again try the other key, and if you get the D.E.S.S. key code again, take both keys with you and walk away for about 1/2 hour. The computer will reboot, it should start, if it does not start call Roadside Assistance.



Also read my( Deanna777) first thread " D.E.S.S. Key code on a 2014RTS-SE6" and the first post, then read/ see pictures of the D.E.S.S. Hope this helps, keep us posted on what you find out @ your dealership.

Well, I got my DESS key code error again. The first time it happened, I was able to take the battery cable loose, and reset everything. This time, I was about 250 miles from home, and it did it again. After about 5 minutes, it worked again. Guess I will be taking it in for a service soon and see what my dealer needs to do.

Also, read my first " Thread about this issue( D.E.S.S. Key code on a 2014RTS-SE6 Cognac by Deanna777) I posted some pictures when I got the D.E.S.S. key code. If your dealer needs to replace the D.E.S.S. module, and ignition Switch, and reprogram keys it is Under Warranty. Have your dealer change your back trunk key. Also, read the beginning of this thread. Deanna
