The 1330 is happiest when shifted at about 3000 - 3500 rpms. I have been doing this for 18,000 miles, get smooth shifts, and mileage in the 39 to 41 mpg range. You have plenty of low range torque to get up and go in any gear.

The higher range of shifting 5000 - 5500 is reserved for the 998 V twin engine.

ECO Mode will have you shifting at slightly less. There is a recent ECO Mode thread with all kinds of opinions. Choose the answer you like on that one.

EDIT: After all the miles, I do mostly shift by the sound of the engine--and that is always ballpark 3,000 rpms.

You'll hear a lot of different answers on this.

    Here's mine.....

When I'm riding in the city and in traffic, and I don't need quick acceleration, I shift at 3,000. When I'm riding agressively, and need to gain speed quickly (like merging onto the freeway) I tend to shift between 3-3,500. I'm still getting used to this engine that seems to run at higher revs than then the engines on my previous bikes.

Most everyone here will probably tell you to shift at 3,000

    Pam

    Post RE: Shifting Points

I read the previous responds and my shift is a little different. From First to second and to third gear I shift at or about 2800 RPMs from fourth through 6 I shift at 3000 - 3500 RPMs. The only difference is I shift a little earlier than the previous responders. I shift by the sound of the engine.

This thread is very timely in that after two recent rides in the Blue Ridge Mountains where I was riding in quite a "spirited" manner and using a lot of engine braking on descents my mileage was north of my long term average of 36.2. I was shifting considerably higher, like in the 3,000 to 3,500 range.

I'm one of those who shifts early... and my bike seems to do just fine!
I grab second and third at about 2,000 rpm
Fourth, Fifth and Sixth get the nod at 2,500 rpm.
As soon as the computer gives me the okay to thumb the paddle; I'm on it!

I shift when the engine sounds like it's ok to shift. For me that's around 3000RPM. Shift when you want, more aggressive higher rpm, less aggressive lower rpm. I think the key is to enjoy the ride and shift when you want. (Within reason of course.)
