Sm vs. Se
Has anyone gone from a pre 14 se5 to the new sm6
thoughts, comments ??
I don't think you would have to shift gears as much between 2 and 3 with lower rpm's.

Shifting
I bought my 2015 about 2 weeks ago, 700 miles, already.
The dealer told me to go up through the gears and can leave it in 5th or 6th gear.
I traded a 2011 in and I was shifting that all the time.
The 15 is MUCH better!!

My very first (2008) was an SM5. All the rest have been the SE version. Three SE5 and one SE6.
The jury is out--depending on who you talk to.
Cost: about $1,500 more for the SE.
Performance: I think about the same. For some of us, it is difficult to use the clutch continuously, as well as all the shifting activity with the foot.
The punch and go solves some of that. No roll off required when upshifting. The SE version will downshift automatically if you so desire.
Gas mileage: About the same for both flavors.
In the beginning, there were a little more mechanical issues with the SE, but we don't hear much about that any more.
Resale: Most people seem to prefer the SE.
Its your choice and whatever floats your boat.

I chose a sm6 for my 2014 rt. I was accustomed to shifting with my 2 wheelers and wanted that feeling. If the se was truly auto (as in full on, with no shifting from the driver), I may have chosen that. To me, if you have to shift, it is not automatic.

I know the question concerned a 2014, and I have a 2012, but I always have preferred the control of a manual. I can downshift for the POP I need without having the little bit of lag time that an automatic, or semi-automatic for that matter has.

The ONLY thing I don't like about my SE-6 is that you can not got to neutral, or disengage the trany whenever you want. You have to be stopped!!

Neither here or there on my remark. Since this is my very first bike ever....mine is a SM6 because I could not find a SE6. But frankly I like changing the gears and it is thrilling to own this motorcycle. I am happy as a clam. It is a 2014 bought it used (but it was basically brand new, and never could figure out why someone would buy it, then immediately sell it....) but that is my gain....I don't know if I would be happy with a SE6 now!

Are you saying that the SE6 requires no shifting? Have you ever ridden one?

Happy, but miss some things
First, since this is a touring machine for me, it is absolutley the right choice to go SE. The freedom that my left hand and foot get is easily worth the trade off. What I miss is the ability to load up power and apply a clutch for a more powerful take off. The auto clutch is a bit sleepy off the line. On a cyle with a clutch I could rev out a gear like 3rd and double or triple shift into a cruising gear. With the auto I have to go through each gear one at a time.
