Yes this has me scracthing my head, it says this in the online manual, but on the actual RT it says something else! No 9 miles, no 10 minutes.....just that it is at operating temp. To me operating temp is if it turns on and is running it is at operating temp? Am I wrong here? And it should be at idle for 30 seconds. I find both sets of rules (the one in the manual and the one on the bike) a bit at odds with each other. I guess it could be argued they are the same, but they just don't sound the same to me.

how much oil does the engine/tranny require, 5qrts. fine, drain oil, refill with 5qrts.
check oil, can't, why, must go for ride (9miles) to bring oil to operating temps, now check
oil, NOT YET, why must let bike idle for ten minutes then shut off and within 2 minutes check oil.
but the dip stick is impossible to read.

i've been checking the oil level WRONG. i wasn't letting it idle for 10 minutes,

Operating Temp is when the water temp needle gets up anywhere near the center or somewhat lower....mine never reaches center. Stop, take off helmet, raise seat, pull out dip stick and check oil. I have also repeatedly checked mine in the morning or after it sits for days, out of curiosity, and the stick still measures exactly the same. Don't think you need to worry much bout how or when or whether its hot enuf, etc, to check the oil. Throw the manual away....
