Do I Need a Special Tool?
I noticed the side panels on my 2014 RTL were loose. I took out my tool pouch to find the right Torx bit to tighten them. Lo and behold, I discover the screws have a "nipple" down in there preventing the Torx bit from entering. Whassup with that? I stopped by my local dealership and asked one of the guys about it. He told me there was no special bit (with a hole in the end to go over the nipple). That just a regular Torx bit would work. Well, I can't get it. Was he mis-informed? Am I just not doing it right? Is there REALLY a special Torx bit with a hole in the end? Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks.

DO NOT TAKE THESE OUT
These are pop outs do not unscrew them.
they have hooks on the other side that are designed to pop out, not unscrew.

OK, so why wouldn't my tool kit have one of those bits? Why would my dealership (admittedly, I talked to a salesperson and not a mechanic) basically say I didn't need that? Where can I find those special bits? Thanks.

OK, so I shouldn't take them out. What about the loose panels? Do I still need one of those special "safety" bits to tighten them up or just let them flop?

Grab the panel and pull it off. Then you will see why getting the tool would be useless. Also you will see why it is loose.

you will have to unscrew the other screws that hold this panel, but the two with the nipple do not screw out, they pop out.

Usually you will find these in places were it is not in your best interest to remove them (as mentioned). That is why they are made this way because few people have the correct tool. It keeps you from messing something up.

If your panel is loose it is most likely because the rubber grommet has been pushed through. The posts point in two directions and you have to bend the plastic to get the second post in.

...And don't worry; you're not the first person to notice that you don't have this tool available...
...And you won't be the last!

Name of tool
These are called tamper proof torx bits and are made that way so the common person does not try to take them out. They are used a lot in electronics. The bits can be bought at most places that sell tools.
