    Question BIG 'E'

Today while riding home, I did a hard acceleration to get around traffic; happened to look down; and saw a BIG E in place of the gear number.

I let up on the throttle and shifted gears and it disappeared.
At first I thought it was just the light making the 6 look like an 'E', but I was in 4th

Absolutely no effect on my Spyder and no "error codes", but curious as to what this could be.

I do not use Eco mode and the Spyder was not in Eco mode. Found nothing in manual (but could have missed it).

    Anyone seen this? Any ideas?

    Thanks

    AJ

AJ, that is a gear position sensor error and it usually happens when you come to a sudden stop. The computer isn't as fast as your braking, or in your case, as fast as your acceleration. As long as it goes away you are fine.

Sounds like a gear position sensor hiccup. Could have been due to momentary confusion as to what gear the bike was in, corrected when you shifted gears. Others will likely weigh in with more comprehensive/detailed explanations, and with other possible causes.

    Default Ooops..!!

that is the gear position sensor trying to tell you something that ain't so. Usually happens between gears on a soft shift but maybe gunning up put it in a position where it thinks you missed a gear. As long as it went out and no codes your fine.

I have seen that big E a number of times and asked a BRP technical guy at Spyderfest about it. I've only seen it when riding in ECO mode but he said that it is a warning that you are reaching the maximum revs for the particular gear you are in. If you ignore the E and continue to wind out the engine you will hit the rev limiter.

The malfunction indicator lamps list on pg 140 of my owner's guide says the gearbox position sensor malfunction big E is also accompanied by flashing N and R indicator lamps. It also appears to me, like Ann said, that sometimes my shifting may work faster than the ECM. JMO.

    otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

Sometimes I get the "Big E" also on my SM6. It happens to me when I put the bike into reverse, right after engaging reverse, when completely stopped with the engine at idle. I'll see the "E" until I start moving backward. Sometimes, not always.
I've only seen the green arrow in ECO mode, never the "E".
It seems to be little more than an inconvenience.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Just an interesting observation on my part since I read this forum every day, but this is like the 5th person in the last 2 weeks that reported this same problem.

Possibly some BUDs code update recently? Or maybe a batch of bad switches? Something?

Not saying there is but I find it odd that since the 2014 came out I never saw this reported and now a bunch are cropping up.

Bob, have most of these people said that they are getting the E while upshifting? I've never seen that myself, just on quick stops and I've never seen the flashing N and R accompanying it.

Maybe I need to do some jack rabbit starts to see if I can replicate what happened to AJ.

Perhaps it's just the Nature of The Beast; it doesn't like extra fast upshifts or stops...
We haven't seen very many times, where it lead to anything more than the "E" showing up on the screen.

I saw a flash of E the other day. I got in a hurry and my R to 1 shift was faster than usual. The only other place is at the gas station where after fillup, I want to get out of there. Not waiting until the has given permission (boot up process) to leave will show me an E if I want to shift into first to quickly.

There may be problems cropping up--since many have posted. My experiences with the E are self induced--IMO.

The computer likes to let us know just who is in charge sometimes.

It has happened to me once also when I was accelerating quickly to avoid traffic. It was definitely hi-revs and quicker than normal attempt at shifting. I had always assumed it was just the computer telling me I was being a bad boy.
I haven't seen it since that one occurrence.

Same thing happened to me last week on my new 2014 RT-S SE6:

    http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/s...gear-indicator

Once I started to do a more positive shift instead of a quick hit of the paddle shifter, I no longer see the problem...
