Dumb question - accelerator

Ok guys, time for a dumb question. Got the RT-S, so obviously I have cruise control. The problem is, hubby rides in front of me and has no ability to ride at a smooth pace, so the cruise control is USELESS when we're together. Soooo the question is, how do you keep your hand from hurting on long rides when not using cruise? We rode 4 hours total the other day - which wasn't a problem, except toward the end I started having trouble with my hand getting tired. I was fidgeting a bit due to back issues too - but that's another story. I'm working that one out and have an idea how to fix that. But the hand - I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

they call them cramp busters or palm cruise... helps a lot on the long roads... slips on the throttle under ten bucks...

years ago before the "Fiddle Gummit" got involved motorcycles came with a throttle drag that you could set and with a light pressure hold the throttle at any position but you did have to consciously roll it closed.Now a days there are throttle locks which you can use to lock the throttle in position but unlock with a flip of your thumb.Throttle Meister also makes a lock that releases just by starting to close then once released it will act as a normal throttle.I have used a throttle lock with a cruise for years and been very happy with it. I set mine loose so just hold the position but when I let go or need to close the throttle it does so.

hubby has one of those cramp buster like things on his bike. I didn't know if they worked as well on the can-am, so I will be happy to try one. Thanks for the input.

If he Has a cramp buster he should have no problem keep a good steady speed! Just set a place you will stop ahead of time & ryde at your own place

CRAMP BUSTER! Works great and cheap! This is the only way I ride my 2009 RS.

Every Cramp Buster I've had has gradually reached the point it slips. I now use a Throttle Rocker, it has been on for 2 years with no problem.

With you having cruse control, explain to him the problems you are having and ask him to let you lead. If he still wants to lead...

Far be it for me to give a woman hand techniques, but here you go. If you are grabbing the throttle with your entire hand, i.e. fingers and thumb try a change of technique. Try sliding your hand back a little to where just your fingers and upper part of your palm is in contact with the throttle. In other words your thumb is barely touching it. If you are white knuckling it you can even induce back, shoulder, and neck pain. Relax your grip. JMHO

That fear you feel at giving women ideas... well, that's the special ops part of you talking. You know when you're in trouble. LOL Kidding. Seriously though, yes I do have the problem of holding on a bit tight, still. No matter how hard I try I still end up with the not quite white knuckling. With my left hand if I'm doing that I can relax and remove my hand and just stretch out. Harder to do on the throttle side. But I will definitely practice your idea and see if it helps. I don't really WANT to have to buy something to help with throttle when I have a freakin' cruise control, but unless I take the lead and then listen to hubby complain about my every move, the best bet is for me to stay in the rear. Yes, he's a control freak, but then that's what we AF people tend to be, right?

setting your cruise control at a speed that's a little slower than his average speed, so that when you set & run on the cruise you'll slowly drop back; then every now and then without turning the cruise off, just add a little twist to the throttle & catch up again. All the time you are running only on the cruise, you can relax your hand, & you only need to twist tighter every now & then. That not only eases any cramps, but the on/off grip pattern exercises your hand and helps avoid them in the first place as well as strengthening your grip over time.

Me, I have a prosthetic joint in my thumb/wrist on my right hand, so I use have the cruise on & use a cramp buster pretty much all the time just to make the spyder go - works brilliantly!!

I did not see it mentioned, but assume your husband is on two wheels.

The recommendation to relax your grip is a huge bit of advice.

Realize also, that as was mentioned to set the CC a bit slow and then catch up is solid info also.

You might also try to use the CC speed increase / decrease by flicking the lever up or down will be good enough unless your partner is really up and down on the speeds.

Simply relax the grip to idle, then use the CC switch to dial in or control speed changes. Ensure though that you wind the grip back up a bit before disengaging the CC.

Some other considerations, ensure the mechanics of your RTs are good. Simple things like front end alignment, front wheel balance, seating position, or anything else that may be having you hanging on too tight.

There are "wrist savers", $10 +/-. Not throttle lock but eases the strain on the wrist by using your palm.

If you are acquiescing and staying in the back consider this. I have a thumb problem and if I hold a throttle too long my thumb loses all feeling except pain, and the skinny grips on the Spyders don't help.

I got the Kuryakyn clamshell grips that go OVER the existing grips. They're very fat and allow me to grab the grips "mitten" style with my thumb on top of the grip.
