Getting the wife a 2012 RS-S, where can you purchase a backrest at a reasonable price?

Yes. It's under $500.00, easier to install, and is well built. Get it here: http://www.smoothspyder.com/backrest/

I recommend the 2nd Generation BRP Can Am Spyder RS/ST Backrest... P/N 219400350. It fits way better than the original OEM backrest and does not need a Sports rack.

$660 are you kidding me?? The advantage with SmootSpyder is that if no passenger it adjust up for the driver.

The Utopia will set you back about $250 plus shipping. It works great, and is a very easy install. My first farkle on the 2014 RT. Bought it before the bike was here.

You will need to cut a slit in the RS-S seat I believe.

    Pitzerwn,

    Nope, I'm not kidding you.

I actually paid way below $660. It's called shopping around and using 'Make an Offer' on ebay.

I did look at the Smooth Spyder backrest when deciding on a backrest. But to me the backrest was and is ugly (my opinion) and I'm in my early 30s so I don't need back support at this present moment. If I ride solo.. I don't want a backrest sticking up in the back. The new OEM backrest take less than a minute to take off (No exaggeration-I timed myself this morning). Also I don't like to cut into anything.. unless it is absolutely necessary.

We rode to the beach yesterday and the wife said the backrest was really comfortable.

To each their own. Also only 36 tomorrow fyi , dont "need" back rest support mostly solo rider but is comfy for longer rides fyi & holds my flag for PGR missions. Win win for me when i have a passenger quick adjustment (while she fixes hair in helmet) & we're gone np

spending 500+ on a backrest is close to criminal, or should i say charging 500+ is criminal. I bought one of these and its great, looks like its original equipment and being a crappy mechanical person i was still able to get it on myself easy.

I like my OEM sport rack with the backrest. The sport rack also gives you the ability to mount up a top box too. Remove it all when riding solo.
IMHO those aftermarket bolt on backrests just look bad. Get what you pay for I guess.....

To each his own. I like the look and very stable, I only ride the spyder 2 up so i never would take it off and for us poor people that need to save up for the astronomical service costs its less than half the cost of the BRP plus sport rack lol

good luck and let us know what you wind up with.

    Lightbulb

I just got the OEM 2nd gen with the part # ending 350. It feels like it's worth every penny that BRP robbed me of. It is heavy duty, well padded, good looking, removable, and feels and looks well made and expensive. I was looking at the cheaper ones, and I wouldn't have minded the 10 speed / chopper look, if I always rode with a passenger.
The sweetness of a low price wears off just as buyers remorse kicks in when buying on price. Although I do agree the BRP unit is pricey, if you've ever unboxed one, you will know why.

I'm glad that others are chiming in about the OEM 2nd Gen Backrest. It is truly the best option in my opinion. My wife loves it and said it is very comfortable and I love the quick interchangeability from 2up to solo look.

    Default My new backrest

I just put my smoothspyder on this weekend and for the $480 I spent (shipping included) I got TWO quality backrests!! When my wife is not riding I put it into the driver position and when she is I adjust it to her liking. Also great for closing the gap for a child if you take your kids on a ryde!! If you choose smoothspyder you won't be dissppointed.

Check the for sale boards. There were some on there for a decent price.

As the OP is 'Getting the wife a 2012 RS-S...', I believe he is needing a driver's backrest, unless he is planning to ride behind his wife.

As such, I believe the Utopia is your best best. Looks factory and is a very high quality product. http://www.utpr.com/spyder.html
