    Default Sadly.....

not many native americans were and yet they contributed a great deal to the war effort. Their language used as code was never broken and saved countless lives. Did see the odd post about the net remembering thaat day. Soon there will be no one from that era....will it be remembered at all..?? We would not be here today if not for them...

Was at a function about a month ago, mostly military & family of ex-military. nobody knew who Ira Hayes was. Asked the guy playing music for us to play it & he asked me who he was. This guy was in his mid fifties.

Made me sad to find this out at an ex-military function.

A sad situation indeed. I believe that there was a movie made about the soldiers that raised the flag at Iwo Jima. It was sad to watch. Ira Hayes was portrayed as an alcoholic if I am not mistaken.

I saw that same movie, and that's what I remember most, being portrayed as an alcoholic.
